SANITARY WASTE} CAN Filed Oct. 19, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 13, 1934 UNITED STATES SANITARY WASTE GA John F. Geibel, Buffalo, N. Y., assignor to Master Metal Products, Inc., Buffalo, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application October 19, 1931, Serial No. 569,672
13 Claims. (01. 22017) This invention relates to improvements in sanitary waste cans or garbage receptacles of the type including an outer can body or frame having a swinging cover and an inner can body or pail having a handle.
It is the chief object of this invention to provide simple and inexpensive means for coupling the inner pail to the outer pail and thereby permit the carrying of both the inner and outer canbodies as a unit by the one handle, when desired.
Another object is the provision of a coupling means of this character which is positive and reliable in operation, and which is designed to be conveniently controlled.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and efficient automatic coupling mechanism which is designed to be latched when the cover of the outer can-body is closed to prevent the withdrawal of the inner can-body from the outer one, and which is released when the cover is opened to permit of such withdrawal.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a receptacle embodying my improvements. Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the cover elevated, the coupling member being released, and the inner pail partially withdrawn from the outer can-body. Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section taken substantially in the plane of line 3-3, Figure 1. Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the coupling member or yoke, the same being shown by full lines in its released position and by dotted lines in its latched or coupled position. Figure 5 is a fragmentary section taken "on line 55, Figure 3. Figure 6 is a ,view similar to Figure 4, showing a slightly modified formof the coupling member; Figure '7 'is a side elevation, partly in section, showing a modification of my invention. Figure 8 is a side elevation, similar to Figure 2, of such modification. Figure 9 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section on line 99, Figure '1. Figure 10 is a fragmentary side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the coupling member or hook, the same being shown by full lines in its latched position, and by dotted lines in its released position. Figure 11 is a view similar to Figure 10, showing aslightly modified form of the coupling member or hook.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several'v'iews.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1-6, inclusive, the same comprises an outer can-body, supporting frame or container 10 of cylindrical form, open at its upper end and made of sheet metal or, other appropriate material. Removably contained within this can body is a garbage can or receptacle 11 having a bail or handle 12 pivoted thereto adjacent its upper end. As seen in Figure 3, this bail is connected to radial pivot pins 13 projecting from diametrically opposite sides of the pail 11 and being-of a length to extend beyond the walls of the outer can-body 10.
The upper end of -the can body 10 is provided with a vertically swinging cover 14 pivotally connectedby a strap 15 with a bracket 16 secured to I the rear side of said can-body. The means for raising the cover to its open position may be of any suitable construction, that shown in the drawings consisting of a substantially horizontal rock shaft 1'? located at the lower end of the outer can-body and terminating at its front end in a foot pedal 18 and at its rear end in a crank arm 19' connected by a link 20 with the cover-strap 15. When the foot pedal is depressed, the rock shaft is oscillated in a direction to cause its crank to pull downwardly on the link 20 and open the cover, as seen by dotted lines in Figure 1. With the cover in its open position, the inner pail 11 can be readily removed from the outer can-body by swinging thehandle 12 to the upright position shown in Figure 2.
In order to permit of conveniently carrying both the outer can-body l0 and-the inner pail 11 as a unit by the handle 12, I have provided a coupling mechanism for enabling the waste can to be so carried or for permitting the inner pail to be readily uncoupled from the outer can-body and be independently removed therefrom, as when it is desired to empty the contents of the inner pail into an outdoor receptacle or other place to receive it. To this end, I provide the upper end of the outer can-body 10 in its diametrically opposite sides with upwardly-opening notches or recesses 21, which are adapted to receive the handle-pins 13 in the lowered position of the inner pail, as shown in' Figures 1, 3 and 4. In this connection it will be noted that the handle 12 is connected at its free ends to' the outer end of the pins 13 and in its lowered position, shown by full lines in Figure 1, the handle partially embraces the front side of the outer can-body 10. For the purpose of arresting the downwardswinging movement of the handle and preventing its striking against the outer can body and marring its finish, the handle-pins preferably terminate at their outer ends in substantially vertiGa/l eyes 13a and the perforated ends of the handles are threaded on the top portions of the eyes while the lower portions thereof constitute stops or abutments against which the adjoining edges of the handle are adapted to engage in the lowered position of the handle, as shown in Figures 1 and 5.
Mounted on the opposite sides of the outer can-body 10 adjacent its recesses 21, are coupling members or catches 22 which are preferably of yoke shape and are pivoted at 23 to swing vertically. Each yoke-shaped coupling member terminates at one end in a hook 24 which is adapted to interlock with the top side of the companion handle-pin 13 to prevent its displacement from the companion recess 21, .whileits-opposite end terminates in a trip arm 25 for shifting the yoke to its coupled or latched position as shown by full lines in Figure l and by dotted lines in Figure 4. A spring 26 connected at one end to the yoke 22 and at its other end to the can-body 10 serves to constantly urge said yoke to its released position shown by full lines in Figures 2'and 4, in which position the space or recess 27 formed between the yoke elements 24 and 25 registers with the companion recess 21 in the can-body to permit the withdrawal of'the inner pail therefrom.
The trip arm 25 of the coupling member 22 is so disposed that it is engaged by the rim of the cover 14 in its closed position to maintain the coupling yoke in its latched position'to prevent withdrawal of the inner pail from the outer one and thereby permit both can-bodies to be carried as a unit from the one handle. When the cover is raised, the spring 26 swings the coupling member toits released position to uncouple the inner pail from the outer pail and permit its removal therefrom, and when the cover is again closed the coupling member is automatically tripped to its latched position, the weight of the cover holding it in such position.
In the modified form of the coupling member shown in Figure 5, the same is provided with a weighted arm 28 which serves constantly to swing the coupling member to its released position. In both forms of the invention, a stop pin 29 is employed for limiting the swinging movement of the coupling member to such released position.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 6-10, inclusive, wherein the elements of the waste receptacle have been given the same reference characters as for the previously described construction, the coupling member is in the form of a vertically-swinging lever or catch 30 pivoted at 31 to the can-body l0 and terminating at its upper end in a hook 32 which is adapted to interlock with the companion handlepin 13. A spring 33 applied to the-catch serves to constantly urge it to its latched position, while a stop 34 limits the swinging movement of the catch to its released position. At its sides these catches may be provided with laterally-bent flanges 35by which they may be shifted by the user to their released positions when it is desired to remove the inner pail 11 from the outer can-body 10. If desired, however, these catches may be released by swinging the handle 12 rearwardly to bring their lower ends into engagement with the flanges 35 and thereby eifect the release of the catches from the handle-pins 13, at the same time raising the inner pail with the handle I as a lever until the handle-pins are clear of. the
catch, after which the inner pail can be removed in an obvious manner. I
In the modified form of the catch shown'in Figure 10, the same is provided with a weight 36 to urge it to a latched position.
