This invention relates to a sacking device for grain baskets, and the like, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and efficient means for supporting a sack adjacent a pouring spout of a basket in a manner to facilitate the pouring of the contents of a basket into a sack.
A further object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient means for actuating the closure gate of a discharge spout of a basket and the like.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the basket in a dumping position, and illustrating the manner of supporting a bag for receiving the contents of the basket;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational View of a portion of a basket illustrating the discharge spout and gate-operating means;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a basket, showing the bag-supporting means in a folded inoperative position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the basket illustrating the dumping spout and the stop bar of the bag-supporting means in its extended position;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of the basket and spout illustrating the same in a dumping position; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the bag-supporting means.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that It designates a basket or other container having a discharge spout II at one side adjacent the bottom thereof. The basket I0 is provided with a discharge opening 12 leading to the spout H. The spout H is provided with a bottom It and upstanding side flanges l3 which are secured to the basket in any suitable or conventional manner common to the trade. The side flanges l3 are provided with inturned gate-retaining lips 15 which overlap the front face of the vertically slidable closure gate It, as shown in Figure 2, to provide a vertical track-way for the gate I6.
An operating rod I1 is connected at its lower end 18 to the gate [6 and passes through a guide 1 Claim. (01. 226 555) bracket- [9, Whi0h bracket is carried by the side of the basket l0 above the gate l6. An expansion coil spring 20 is carried by the operating rod I1 and is interposed between the end I8 of the rod I! and the bracket Hi to automatically force the gate It to a closed position over the discharge opening I2 when the rod I7 is released from the hand of an operator. The rod I1 is preferably provided with an outwardly inclined hand-grip portion 2| at its upper end which normally is located near one of the basket handles 22 so that the grip portion 2| and the adjacent basket handle 22 may be gripped by one hand, and the opposite basket handle 22 may be gripped by the other hand of an operator as shown in Figure 1, while dumping or lifting the basket II).
A bag-supporting means 23 is pivotally secured at the lower end of the spout H and comprises a pair of parallel arms 24 having angular hooks 25 at their outer ends, as shown in Figure 6. The rear end of each arm 24 is provided with a transverse pivot 26 having an angular hook 21, the pivot 26 being riveted to the side I3 of the spout I2 or otherwise secured to provide a journal, the opposite pivots 26 constituting journals for the opposite arms 24, as shown in Figure 2.
The rear terminal of each arm 24 is provided with an inclined portion 28 having a further angular extension 29 extending in a plane substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the arm. These extensions 29 of the opposite arms support a transverse stop bar 30 therebetween at the inner extremities of the arms 23, as shown in detail in Figure 6. A spring latch tongue 3| is cut from each side flange l3 of the spout I l and is bent laterally and outwardly to hold the arms 23 in a folded position against the basket l0 when the arms 23 of the sack-supporting means are swung inwardly and upwardly to an inoperative position toward the basket [0 beyond the tongues 3 I, as shown in Figure 3.
When it is desired to pour the contents of the basket l0 into the sack or bag S which is hooked at its corners over the hooks 25 and 21 of the sack-supporting means, as shown in-Figure 1, when the arms 24 are swung outwardly and downwardly to the position shown in Figures 1 and 5, the grip portion 2| of the rod 20 is gripped by one hand of the operator and pulled upwardly to open the gate IS. The contents of the basket M will then pour out through the opening I 2 and fall into the upper open end of the sack S. It should be noted that the transverse stop bar 38 will swing under the bottom of the spout H and contact the bottom of the basket I 0 and limit the swing of the arms 23 in a downward direction and support the bag or sack-supporting means in a rigid open position. The arms 24 extend substantially horizontally when the sack-supporting means are swung to an operative extended position.
It will be noted that an efilcient means is provided to firmly hold the sack-supporting means in a folded or inoperative position, when not in use, as well as providing means to firmly brace the sack-supporting means when the arms 23 are swung to an operative or open position.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a receptacle having a discharge opening, a discharge spout adjacent the opening, a sack-supporting means movable to and from an operative position, said sack-supporting means comprising a plurality of spaced arms pivoted to said spout and having a transverse connecting stop bar at their rear ends, said stop bar being adapted to swing under said spout and contact the bottom 01' said receptacle to limit the outward swing oi the arms and hold the arms in an operative and substantially horizontal position, sack-engaging hooks carried at the opposite ends of said arms for suspending a sack below said spout and discharge opening, and spring tongues carried by said spout for engaging said arms when said sack-supporting means is swung to an inoperative position to hold the sack-supporting means in a locked inoperative position.
