Description

May 3, 1949. w, ROTH: I 2,468,897
MAILBAG Filed Feb. 10, 1947 wazberl jleoik Patented May 3, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in mailbags and is a continuation-in-part of my prior copending application, Serial No. 688,132, filed August 2, 1946, for Letter boxes issued May 27, 1947, as Patent No. 2,421,221.
The principal object of this invention is to provide novel mail bags formed for use in combination with the novel bag supporting means described and claimed in the above identified application.
Another object is to provide as a part of the bag novel supporting and carrying members for the has.
A further object is to provide in a mail bag adapted to be held supported in a mail box, a plurality of moisture drain openings.
Still another object is to provide novel handle bars for the mouth of the mail bag with midportions adapted to be locked together by a suitable lock.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim, it being understood that I do not intend to limit myself to these specific details of construction, except as defined in the claim.
In the drawings, like parts throughout the several views are given like numerals and are thus identified in the following detailed description:
Figure 1 is a general perspective view of my novel bag in open position.
Figure 2 is a cross section View of the bag, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the novel bag with the top closed and locked together.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, there is shown a mail bag 2|. This mail bag is provided with a pair of cross rods 28 and 21 having rollers 28 at each end. These rollers are journaled to rotate on reduced ends of the rods and are adapted to co-act with the supporting means shown and described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 688,132, now Patent No. 2,421,221, issued May 27, 1947, so as to have its bottom 34 held raised above the bottom of a mail box of the standard street type for collecting packages and letters.
Each rod 26 and 27 is preferably formed with offsets or mid-loops 39 and 3| positioned so as to fit together when the bag 2| is closed. These mid-loops 39 and 3| serve as handles and as means for securing a lock 32 thereon after the postman has removed the bag from a mail box in which the same was mounted. Various means around the rods.
As above stated the bags are held raised from the bottom of a mail box when mounted therein, and accordingly they are made of a predetermined or standard length.
With the bottom of the bag thus elevated above the interior bottom surface of the box, any moisture or water likely to collect in the bag will more readily drain off, openings reinforced by brass rings or grommets 35 being provided in the bag bottom to facilitate drainage. Also, with the bag raised above the mail box floor any shallow amount of water in the mail box will be below the bottom of the bag 2|, to thereby avoid water damage to the mail in the bag from this cause.
Thus I have provided novel improvements in mail bags, whereby the mail is protected from loss by its receipt directly into the flared open mouth of the bag in the mail box; and whereby water damage to mail is substantially eliminated by the novel bag support rods for holding the bag raised from the bottom of a mail box in which the same is mounted and by the drain openings in the bottom of the bag for discharge of any accumulated moisture or Water inside the bag itself.
Although only one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described in detail, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited thereto. For a definition of the limits of the invention, reference should be had to the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A mail bag for use in deposit and collection mail boxes of the type having bag supporting track means, comprising an openable and closable wide mouth of parallelogram configuration when in open position, a bottom portion with a plurality of drainage apertures therein, supporting rods secured to two opposite edges of the mouth of the bag for opening and closing the same, said rods having reduced rounded ends, supporting rollers mounted for rotation around said reduced rounded ends and for co-action with said supporting track means and medial lock connectable handle loops formed from each rod.
