7 Claims. (Cl. 220-15) This invention relates to doublewalled containers, and especially to insulated types of containers suitable for use as ice buckets, food receptacles, or the like.
Heretofore there have been many different types of containers provided for holding a variety of items. Some of such containers are of a heavy, costly construction and they have been of a single, or double walled construction, dependent upon the use for which the container is adapted. Sometimes a thick insulation wall is used as the sole wall of the container. There is a continuing commercial requirement and demand for attractive, lightweight double walled containers, such as one that might be used, for example, in the living room or den of a home for storing ice therein. Previous types of con.- tainers like that developed by the present invention may have been diflicult to clean, may have been diflicult to carry or may have been objectionable for other reasons.

it includes an inner receptacle or container 2 preferably It thus is the general object of the present invention to provide a novel and attractive, lightweight, double walled container wherein the components of the container can readily be disassembled and assembled, as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel plastic inner container received in and positioned by an outer metal container and retained therein by use of a carrier bail. v
A further object of the invention is to secure an inner container in an outer container by use of bearing andbail means extending between the containers and retaining them in operative engagement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a molded plastic inner container or receptacle with a bearing socket protruding therefrom and with bearing means being posi-' tioned in apertures in the outer container or receptacle and engaging the bearing sockets to retain the inner and outer members in operative association.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will be made more apparent as the specification proceeds.
Attention now is particularly directed to the accompanying drawings wherein a double walled container embodying the principles of the invention is shown and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the double walled container of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the container of Fig. 1 with the cover thereon shown in exploded position; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary but enlarged vertical section of one side portion of the container of Figs. 1 and 2 illustrating the means used forsccuring the inner and outer containers together. a
When referring to corresponding parts shown in the drawings and referred to in the specification, corresponding numerals are used to facilitate comparison therebetween.
The present invention, generally speaking, relates to a double walled container comprising an inner receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed, outwardly extending sockets on the outer wall thereof, an outer receptacle made from moldable plastic material, such as polyethylene, polystyrene or the like, and which usually has an outwardly flared or flanged top portion 3 provided thereon. This top portion 3 has a downwardly extend ing flange 4 formed on the base thereof adapted for snug engagement with an outer receptacle or container 5 so that the flange 4 and the top portion 3 of the inner receptacle 2 aid in positioning the inner receptacle in nested relationship for engagement with the outer receptacle 5. The outer receptacle or container 5 preferably is made of suitable metal finished in any desired manner.
At diametrically opposed portions of the inner receptacle 2, outwardly extending bail seats, or sockets 6 are formed on theinner receptacle 2. In this particular embodiment of the invention, these sockets 6 are shown to be of elongate oval shape, butthey may be of any desired size for receiving and engaging members, such as bearings 7. These bearings 7 are seated in holes 8 provided in diametrically opposed portions of the outer receptacle 5 and the bearings 7 and holes 8 are aligned with the sockets 6 when the inner and outer receptacles are in their desired, nested relationship with each other.
Flanges 10 limit the movement of the bearings 7 into the receptacle and/ or bearing sockets 6.
As an important feature of the invention, the inner and outer receptacles or containers of the invention are held in operative engagement with each other by means of'a bail 9 that has inwardly turned bail ends 9a extending through and engaging the bearings 7 to hold such bearings in desired positions and with thebail 9 and/orthe bearings 7 engaging the sockets 6 to hold the receptacles together. 7 1
It will be realized that any desired type of a cover, or top 11 can be provided for the container '1, if desired. The top 11 seats on an inner shoulder 12 of the inner receptacle. 1
It should be noted that preferably the inner receptacle 2 is positioned with its walls spaced from thewalls of the outer receptacle 5 because of the flange 4 and adjacent portions of such receptacle 2. This provides a dead air insulating space between the walls of the container.
By elongating the sockets provided for the bearings 7, the alignment of the-inner receptacle in proper relation with the outer receptacle 5 is facilitated. Thus the sockets could comprise parallel ribs for receiving the bail ends 9a therebetween, and no lining up of the in ner and outer receptacles would be required. To lock the inner receptacle 2 in, the outer receptacle 5, all that is required is a protuberance on the inner receptacle below the bail end 9a to engage such end and:prevent outward movement of the inner receptacle. Thus the bail sockets or seats 6 may be completely enclosing .alignable stru turesyormay be parallel ribs'defin'i'ng" anndle'ssbail end receiver; or be a short or endless protuberance on the inner receptacle below the bail end 9a.
Should the use of more permanent type of bearing means be desired, the outer receptacle 5 may have reenforcing bearing means provided as integral, or perma nent portions thereof. The end sections of the bail 9 may extend through any type of bearing 7 provided in the" outer receptacle 5 and engage the bail sockets or seats- 6 to hold the iriner and outer receptacles together. However, when it is desiredto clean or wash the components of the container 1, the bail ends 9a can be sprung outwardly thereof toirelease the bail .ends from engagement with the bearingsfl and/or bail sockets or seats 6 so that the inner and outer receptacles can be removed from en gagement with each other for cleaning, or other purposes. e I I M It war realized that the inner receptacle 2 is waterproof-and is adaptedto receive ingredients, such as ice cubes or food, or anything else desired therein to retain such articles at a desired temperature because of the dead air space provided, intermediate the" walls of the inner and outer receptacles.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that the objects of the invention have been achieved by the provision of a lightweight, attractive, easily cleaned type of a receptacle for use for storing ice cubes, and the like therein.
. While one complete embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein, it will be appreciated that modification of this particular embodiment of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the scope of they invention as defined'in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A double walled container comprising an inner receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed outwardly extending outwardly open sockets on the outer wall thereof, an'outer receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed holes therein, said inner receptacle having an outwardly flared top portion engaging said outer receptacle to aid in positioning said inner receptacle in said outer receptacle with said holes and sockets aligned and with the walls of said receptacles being spaced from each other, bearing means seated in the holes in said outer receptacle and extending into said sockets in said inner receptacle, and 'a bail engaging and journalled in said bearing means to aid in retaining said bearing means in position and to hold said inner and outer receptacles in operative engagement.
2. A double walled container comprising an inner receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed outwardly extending outwardly open sockets on the outer wall thereof, an outer receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed holes therein, said inner receptacle being positioned in said outer receptacle with said holes and sockets aligned, bearing means seated in the holes in said outer receptacle and extending into said sockets in said inner receptacle, and bail engaging and journalled irrsaid bearing means to aid in retaining said bearing means in position and to hold said and outer receptacles in operative engagement.
3. A double walled container comprising an inner receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed outwardly extending outwardly open sockets on the outer wall thereof, an outer receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed holes therein, said inner receptacle being positioned in said outer receptacle with said holes and sockets aligned, bearing means operatively engaging the holes in said outer receptacle and extending into said sockets, said sockets being wider than said bearing means for adjustment therebetween and snugly engaging the'top and bottom of said bearing means, and a bail engaging and journalled in said bearing means and engaging said sockets to hold said inner and outer receptacles in operative engagement. e

A container comprising inner and outer receptacles, said inner receptacle being of molded plastic construction with an outwardly flared top engaging said outer receptacle and with a pair of bail sockets provided thereon, said outer receptacle having closed periphery apertures therein aligned with said bail sockets, bearing means extending through and supported in said apertures and engaging said bail sockets to secure said and outer receptacles together, and bail means engaging and journalled in said bearing means to retain said bearing means in position.
5. A container comprising inner and outer receptacles positioned in nested relation, said inner receptacle having a pair of vertically spaced bail engaging ribs provided thereon, said outer receptacle having apertures therein aligned with said bail engaging ribs, bearings positioned in said apertures and engaging said ribs, and a bail having inwardly turned end portions extending through said apertures and engaging said bearings to secure said inner and outer receptacles together.
6. A double walled container comprising an inner receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed outwardly extending outwardly open sockets on the outer Wall thereof, an outer receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed holes therein, said inner receptacle having an outwardly flared top portion with a cylindrical portion thereon engaging said outer receptacle to aid in positioning said inner receptacle in said outer receptacle with said holes and sockets aligned and with the walls of said receptacles being spaced from each other, bearing means seated in the holes in said outer receptacle and extending into said sockets in said inner receptacle to aid in retaining said inner receptacle in engagement with said outer receptacle, and a bail engaging and journalled in said bearing means to maintain said bearing means in position and to hold said inner and outer receptacles in operative engagement.
7. A- double walled container comprising an inner receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed outwardly extending outwardly open socket means on the outer wall thereof having top and bottom sections therein, an outer receptacle having a pair of diametrically opposed holes therein, an enlarged cylindrical section at the top of said cylindrical receptacle engaging said outer receptacle, said inner receptacle being positioned in said outer receptacle with said holes and sockets aligned, bearing means seated in the holes in said outer receptacle and engaging said top and bottom sections of said socket means to prevent relative vertical movement of said receptacles, and a bail engaging and journalled in said bearing means to aid in retaining said bearing means in position for holding said inner and outer receptacles in operative engagement.
