Application November 28, 1955, Serial No. 549,311
2 Claims. (Cl. 220-18) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a holder for garbage, trash and similar cans or receptacles.
An important object of invention is to provide a can or receptacle holder of this character which is constructed and arranged to embrace the upper portion of the can to prevent the latter from becoming upset and to further provide means for attaching the lid of the can to the holder to retain the lid in position.
Another object of invention is to construct the holder in the form of a ring adapted to surround the upper portion of the can and to pivotally attach the ring to an adjacent supporting structure to swing the ring and the lid upwardly into an open position.
A still further object is to provide means for automatically locking the ring in either its raised or lowered position.
An additional object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the holder and lid in raised position;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the holder;
Figure 4 is a front elevational view thereof;
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the lid attaching arm; and
Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective view of the attaching bracket for the holder.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of invention, the numeral 5 designates a channel shaped bracket adapted for attaching to a suitable upright supporting structure 6 and with the flanges 7 and 8 of the bracket in vertical position.
Each flange of the bracket is formed with an opening 9 adapted to receive the outwardly projecting trunnions 10 and 11 which are formed at the outer ends of a pair of resilient arms 12 and 13 which project outwardly laterally from the end portion of a split ring 14 for vertical swinging movement of the ring on the bracket.
A rounded protuberance or lug 15 is formed on the opposing surface of each of the flanges 7 and 8 adjacent the front edge portion of the latter and over which the arms 12 and 13 ride during vertical swinging movement 2,808,173 Patented Oct. 1, 1957 ice of the ring to engage and lock the ring in either its raised or lowered position.
A lid supporting arm 16 is welded or otherwise suitably secured to the front edge portion of the ring 14 and extends upwardly above the ring with the free end portion of the arm positioned substantially parallel to the ring in an elevated position above the same.
The ring 14 is adapted to embrace the upper portion of a garbage, trash or other receptacle 17 and the lid 18 of the receptacle is provided with an inverted U-shaped bracket 19 to which the arm 16 is attached by a bolt and nut 20.
When the ring 14 is swung downwardly into its lowered position to surround the receptacle 17, as shown in Figure l of the drawings, the lid will rest on top of the receptacle and the arms 12 and 13 will move downwardly under the protuberance 15 to lock the lid in its closed position on the receptacle. When the ring 14 is swung upwardly to remove the lid 18 the arms 12 and 13 will ride upwardly above the protuberance 15 and the arms will rest on the protuberances to support the lid and ring in a raised position, as shown in Figure 2.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A can and lid retaining device comprising in combination a channel shaped bracket attached in a vertical position to a supporting structure, said bracket including a pair of spaced apart vertical flanges having aligned openings therein, an annular member adapted to embrace a can and having a pair of resilient spaced apart arms projecting outwardly laterally therefrom, trunnions at the other ends of the arms pivotally supported in said openings for vertical swinging movement of the annular member, protuberances on the opposed faces of the flanges over which the arms ride to lock the annular member in either a raised or lowered position, and a lid attached to the annular member for raising and lowering movement therewith onto and ofl of the top of the can.
2. A can and lid retaining device comprising in combination, a channel shaped bracket attached in a vertical position to a supporting structure, said bracket including a pair of spaced apart vertical flanges having aligned openings therein, an annular member adapted to embrace a can and having a pair of resilient spaced apart arms projecting outwardly laterally therefrom, trunnions at the other ends of the arms pivotally supported in said openings for vertical swinging movement of the annular member, protuberances on the opposed faces of the flanges over which the arms ride to lock the annular member in either a raised or lowered position, an arm attached to and supported in a radial position above the annular member, a lid for the can, and means of securing the lid on said last named arm.
