BOX-COVER FASTENING.
Application filed December 6, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES T. JENE- warn and CHARLES ll. Donnmx, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Blackhawk, in the county of Sauk and State of lVisconsin, and Madison, in the county of Dane and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new Box-Cover Fastening, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in the class of devices for securing lids or covers of boxes without the aid of nails or screws, a metal keeper being hinged to one end of the box body and provided with means for securing it in closed position after the cover has been put in place.
The details of construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts embodying our invention are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box provided with our cover fastening arranged in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a detail perspective illustrating the adjustment of the hinged keeper when applying or removing a cover.
In the several views, 1 indicates the body and 2 the flat cover of a rectangular box or case. A metal keeper or socket 3 for thg cover is preferably attached by nails, screws, or rivets to one end and upper angle of the body 1 and projects above the latter su'liiciently to adapt it to receive one corner of the cover, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Another metal keeper or socket & is applied to the other end and upper angle of the box body 1 and provided with downwardly extended ears which are pivoted to the sides of the body at 5,'so that the keeper may be swung on or off the cover 2, as illustrated in applying the cover and detaching it.,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1,1913.
Serial No. 735,288.
In other words, when the hinged keeper t is thrown back into the position indicated in Fig. 4-, the cover 2 may be applied by slipping its opposite end under the fixed keeper 3, and then, when the cover is flat on the body 1, the hinged keeper 4 may be swung back into place, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. For holding the hinged keeper 4 in this engaging position, we employ a turn-button 6, the same being pivoted on the end of the box body 1 and made of such length that, when turned up as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, its free end extends over and presses upon the adjacent edge of the keeper 4-. It is obvious that the adjustment of this device 6, for securing or releasing the keeper 4:, may be very easily and quickly made.
To prevent the button 6 from becoming accidentally detached from the keeper, the latter is provided with slight projections 7 preferably formed by striking up the metal forming the body of the keeper. It will be understood that the locking device 6 has sufficient resiliency to allow it to be pushed over either of the projections 7, and, when once in place between the two, it is not liable to be accidentally displaced.
W hen duly applied, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cover is held securely both as to endwise and lateral movement.
It will be seen that by means of our invention, a cover 2 may be used indefinitely, since it is subject to no injury in attachment or detachment, and that it may be applied or removed much more quickly than a cover which requires nails, screws, or other analogous means for fastening.
'We provide for sealing the cover, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, where a wire 8 is passed through one end of the hinged keeper 4 and through the adjacent portions of the boX body and cover, and then a lead, or other soft-metal seal 9 is applied to the ends of the wire in a well known manner.
It is to be understood that our invention is applicable to boxes and cases of various forms and materials, for instance, Whether made of metal or Wood or a fiber composition.
VVhat- We claim is The combination With a box body and cover, 01": a keeper constructed of metal and pivoted to one end and upper angle of the body, so that when swung up into Vertical position the keeper projects over and receives the end of the cover, and a turn-butt-on pivoted below the keeper and adapted to engage the same When adjusted in a vertical position, as described.
