Specification of Letters Patent.
imam oct. 17, Isis.
Application filed August 16, 1915. Serial No. 45,672.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. Gon- BOLD and lVILLIS D. WARREN, both citizens of the United States, residing at Walla l/Valla, in the county of Walla Walla and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices for Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
The device which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is designed for the purpose of protecting the ends of paper rolls against damage during shipment and handling of the same.
The invention has for its object to pro vide a simple and eflicient device of the character stated, and to this end it consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a paper roll, showing the protecting device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the members of the device.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a roll of paper, such as in used in machines for printing newspapers, or other continuous-Web printing machines. It may be here stated that the invention is not limited to paper rolls, but can, with equal facility, be applied to rolls of any fabric.
On each end of the roll 5 is mounted an.
edge protecting device composed of a sleeve 6 having at one end an integral, inturned marginal flange 7. The sleeve enclrcles the side of the roll at the end thereof, and the flange overlaps the end of the roll. Against the end of the roll, beneath the flange 7, is a circular plate 8 which covers that portion of the roll end which is inside the flange. The
7 ends and corners of the roll are therefore enhinges 9, and fastened in place on the roll 5 by hasps 10 loosely carried by one of the sections and engageable over staples 11 on the adjacent section, with S-shaped pins 12 passing through the staples above the hasps.
The hasps have a plurality of slots 13 for the staples, to permit adjustment for rolls of different diameters. The device may be made in'two or more sections, connected by the hinges as shown, or with the hasp-andstaple fastenings at each joint.
The cover plate 8 may be of sheet metal, stiff card-board or any other suitable material, and it is attached tov the flange 7 by rivets 14 passing through apertures 15 in the plate and radial slots 16 in the flange, said slots affording ample play of the rivets when the sleeve 6 is tightened around the roll 5. The sleeve 6 is held in place on the roll 5 by being clampel thereon, which can be readily done by means of an ordinary chain wrench or other suitable tool. After the sleeve has been contracted to tightly clamp the roll, it is fastened by the hasp and staple device. The sleeve has two eX-' ternal, parallel, spaced, encircling corruga-' 1. A protecting device for the ends of rolls, comprising a sleeve encircling the side of the roll adjacent to the end thereof, and
having an inturned flange overlapping the clamping the sleeve around the roll, a cover In testimony whereof We affix our signaplate mounted under the flange against the tures in the presence of two Witnesses. end of the roll, anda loose connection be?
