MARY M. HAMMOND, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HAMMOND CASE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
EXTENSIIBLE SAMPLE-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14, 1914. Serial No. 824,626.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY M. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Extensible Sample-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in extensible sample cases.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a sample case which may be quickly adjusted to the desired size and then'retained securely in the position to which it has been adjusted.
A further object of my-invention is to provide a sample case which may be quickly opened for the purpose of fully displaying the contents thereo Another object of my invention is to provide an extensible sample case which is ornamental, which may be cheaply manufactured, which is durable and which is not liable to get out of order.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sample case shown in the open position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, showing the sample case closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line H of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters designate similiar parts in the different views.
The extensible body of the sample case comprises two rectangular members 1 and 2, the member 1 being longitudinally slidably fitted in the member 2. The member 1 is closed at its outer end and is open at its inner end. 'The member 2 is open at both ends, and both members 1 and 2 are open at the same side.
For releasably holding the members 1 and 2 in the positions to which they may be adjusted, the following described mechanism is provided: Through the three sides of the member 2 respectively extend bolts 3,Which in the county of Jackson and are respectively slidably mounted in longitudina-l slots 4 which are provided respectively in the three sides of the member 1. The heads of the bolts 3 bear respectively against the inner walls of the 'member 1. Mounted on the outer ends of the bolts 3 are nuts 5, which respectively bear through the intermediacy of washers 6 against the outer sides of the member 2. Said nuts 5 are preferably blind nuts each provided at its outer end with a slot 7 adapted to receive a screw driver.
The inner side walls of the member 1 are covered with a flexible lining 8 which covers the slots 4 and the heads of the bolts 8. By having the lining 8 flexible, free movement of the bolt heads is permitted, while at the same time the member 1 may be tightly packed, the lining 8 yielding over the slots d to the pressure of the goods. When the members 1 and 2 are adjusted, the linin 8 will yield and permit the heads of the bolts 3 to freely slide.
An extensible closure comprising an inner member 9 and an outer member 10 is employed to close the open side of the extensible body. The member 9 is hinged at its lower end to the member 1 at the open side thereof and adjacent to its closed lower end. The member 10 is provided at opposite longitudinal edges with inwardly turned flanges 11 between which the member 9 is longitudinally slidably fitted, the flanges serving as guides therefor.
WVhen the closure is in the closed position shown in Fig. 4, the flanges 11 embrace the outer sides of the member 2,thereby holding opposite walls of the members 1 and 2 from spreading apart. The flanges 11 further serve to stiffen the closure so as to prevent its being bent.
For clamping the members 9 and 10 together, the member 10 has extending Patented May 23, 1916.
end of the bolt 12 is mounted a nut 15 which bears against a washer 16, which in turn bears against the outer side of the member 10.
Hinged to the member 2 adjacent to the outer end thereof is a cover 17 having secured to its upper side a handle 18. The cover 17 is arranged to close the outer open end of the member 2 and is provided with edge flanges 19 which, when the cover is in the closed position, embrace the outer sides of the member 2 and the member 10, thereby securely holding the closure in the closed position. The cover 17 may be provided with a lock device 20 arranged to cooperate with a lock device 21 provided on the outer side of the member 10, as shown in Fig. 3.
Secured to the member 10 are hasps 22 which are adapted to engage U-shaped members 23 secured to the outer opposite sides of the member 2. Pivoted to the hasps 22 are hooks 2A which are adapted to engage the members 23.
In operating my invention, the nuts 7 and 12 are loosened after which the members 1 and 2 and 9 and *10 are adjusted longitudinally to the desired positions, after which the nuts are tightened. The device is then ready for the use for which it is intended.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
