T. W. HARRISON.-
BAG HOLDER.,
No. 396,561. Patented Jan. 22, 1889.
WITNESSES, AWEWZ'OZ UNITED STATES FFICEo THOMAS 1V. HARRISON, OF EMMETSBURG, IOlVA.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,561, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed May 18, 1887. Serial No. 238,711. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS \Y. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emmetsburg, in the county of Palo Alto and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatiOn.
This invention relates to bag-holders, and has for its object the provision of a metallic frame that can be readily opened and closed and which will re-enforce and stiffen the mouth of the sack and hold it open while filling or removing the contents from the sack.
The holder is constructed to fold and form a handle, and when unfolded it forms a bracket which is fitted in suitable supports and holds the sack in an elevated position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder embodyingmy invention, showing its application; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on the line a: o; of Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a front view of the frame; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5 a modified form of bracket orsupport.
The frame is composed of a series of sections, A, B, G, D, E, and F, which are hinged together. The side sections, A and B, are longer than, the end sections, 0 D and E F. The parts are hinged together by butt-hinge jointsi. e., the end of onescction is recessed and receives a correspondin tenon on the end of the adjacent section, the two sections being united by a rivet or bolt passing transversely through the said jointed ends. The hingejoints are wider than the thickness of the sections and project beyond the sides of the said sections to accommodate the material of the sack and the rubber or other packing which the frame and is adapted to pass through an opening, Z), in the opposite side of the frame. The head a of this bolt 0 is oblong and the opening I) is of corresponding shape, and when the head a is passed through the opening 7) and partially turned, so as to set crosswise of the opening, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the frame is locked. To prevent the bolt turning back accidentally, the spring 21 is provided,- which bears against the side of the head a thereof. The inner end of the bolt is held to the frame by a pin, 20, which extends into a groove, 28, in the said bolt. This groove 28 extends about one-quarter way around the bolt, so as to limit its rotarymovement. Thus when the frame is locked the pin 20, engaging with the end of the groove 28, will limit the movement of the bolt in one direction and the spring 91 will prevent any motion of the bolt in an opposite direction. There may be as many of these locking devices as desired, and one or more maybe provided for corresponding sections of the frame, as may be found necessary. Thus if two locking devices are provided they will be located near the ends of the side sections, as indicated by h 7; and g Z, and if more be provided for instance, fourthey will be disposed as indicated by the let-- ters i j and f m in addition. to the letters 7c and 9 Z.
The holder 0 is bail-shaped and is hinged at its ends to a side section of the frame, preferably to the lugs c and d, secured to the said side section. The hinge-connection is made after the fashion of a rule-joint, so that when the holder is supported in a horizontal position the frame will be supported in a like position, and by opening the frame, as shown in Fig. 1, the mouthof the sack will be held open or distended to facilitate the filling of the sack or the removal. of its contents.
The brackets or supports shown in Figs. at and 5 are each composed of the head a anda shank, which may be a threaded stem, V, or a clamp, K. The bracket shown in Fig. 5 is to be clamped to a standard or rod by the set" screw Z and further held thereon by the set screw Y. The bracket shown in Fig. 4is held in position by being screwed into a partition or wall. The heads of the brackets are recessed or provided with deep depressions V in their upper sides, which receive the holder 0 and support it and the frame. The holder is oblong in cross-section, and when fitted in the depression V of the bracket is held in a horizontal position, as shown most clearly in Fig. at.
The bag or sack M is secured to the frame by rivets, which are located midway between the top and bottom edges of the frame, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, and strips N, of rubber or like material, are secured on the opposing sides of the frame to makea water-tight joint when the frame is closed.
The end joints, l." and Q, have their widest portions projecting inward to obtain a space between the opposing sides of the sections, while the intermediate joints, 3, .9 and 5*, project outward, so as not. to offer any olastruetion tothe inner sides of the sections, which have their inner sides straight and smooth, when the frame is closed, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my inventicm, what I claim, and desire to seeu re by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein shown and described frame for a bag or sack, composed of two side sections, A and B,thc folding end sections, (1 and D, uniting the side sections at one end, and
the folding end sections, E and F, uniting the side sections at their other end, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein shown and described frame for a bag or sack, composed of the side sections, A and B, and their folding end sections, C D and E F, the joints P and Q of the end sections projecting inward, and the joints .9, s, 8 and s between the end and the side sections projecting outward, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the frame composed of a series of sections hinged together, one section having an oblong opening, of the rotatable lock-bolt having an oblong head and secured to acorresponding opposite section of the frame and adapted to have its head thrust through and set crosswise of the said opening, and the spring for engaging with the said head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. The combination, with the frame composed of anumberof sectionshinged together, one section having an oblong opening, of the lock-bolt having an oblong head and a groove, 28, the pin 20, for securing the lock-bolt to a section. of the frame and permitting a partial rotary movement of the said bolt, andthe spring 2.], to prevent the back movement of the said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination, with the frame, of the holder secured to the side of the frame by rule hinge-joints and adapted to hold the frame in a horizontal position and to fold upward, substantially as and for the purpose described.
0'. The combination, with the frame and the holder or bail C, angular in cross-section, of the bracket-support having its head provided with the depression r, which corresponds to the holder in cross-section, suljistantially as and for the purpose described.
7. A combined frame and holder for sacks, composed of a series of sections hinged together, one of the sections having lugs d and e, and the holder hinged by a rule-joint to the said lugs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The combination, with the frame composed of a series of sections hinged together, the hinge-joints projecting beyond theopposing sides of the sections, of the bag secured to the frame and the packing-strips secured to the opposing sides of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS V. HARRISON.
