A Mommy UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT VALLACE, OF MIDWAY, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO AGEORGE H. DUNHAM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CAR.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,029, dated February 7, 1899.
Application filed May 2'7, 1898. Serial No. 681,939. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it 11tayc0nccrn:
Be it known that I, ROBERT WALLACE, of Midway, in the county of Woodford and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be al full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cars, and more particularly to coal-cars, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient cover for a coal-car, whereby to protect the contents of the car from theft and the weather, and which can be conveniently opened for the purpose of loading the car.
A further object is to provide a Vcoal-car with a sectional cover and to cnstruct locking means in such manner that all the sections at one side of the car can be secured with a single seal.
A further obj ect is to provide a cover for a coal-car which shall be easy to manipulate and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
. A further object is to produce a covered coal-car which can be easily loaded and unloaded.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view of a coal-car embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-'section of the same. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification.
A represents the body of a coal-car, to the sides of which, preferably at the upper ends of the standards, rafters l are secured, said rafters extending from opposite sides of the car upwardly and toward each other and at their upper meeting ends are connected to gether by means of cross-bars or braces 2. The meeting ends of the rafters support a footboard 3, running the full length of the car, as in box-cars. at the respective ends of the car is closed by extending the ends of the car upwardly.
The space under the rafters board and be supported thereby. When the doors or roof-sections 4 are closed, they will or opened it may be turned over said foot- A be supported at their edges by means of the rafters, and the free edge of each door or roofsection may be provided with a staple 5 to receive -a suitable loop or hook 6, projecting from a rod 7, mounted at the side of the car. Through all the staples 5 on the doors the projecting loop 6 of the rod 7 is passed, and
the end of Veach rod is provided with an arm 9, secured by means of a suitable seal l0. Thus all the doors or roof-sections can be locked by means of two seals, one at each side of the car, or, if desired, both rods 7 at the respective sides of the car may be secured by means of a single seal.
In order to facilitate the unloading of the car, the latter may be provided in its side, preferably at ornear one end, with a door 8, normally locked by arm 9 and seal l0.
From the construction and arrangement of parts above set forth it will be observed that the car can be tightly closed and locked when loaded, and thus the contents will be safe from theft and will be protected from the effects of the weather. The sections of the roof can be easily opened when unlocked, and the car can be loaded as easily as are coalcars having no roof.
If desired, the doors or roof-sections may be made to slide, as shown in Fig. 3, instead of hinged, as above described.
My improvements are simple in construction, are comparatively inexpensive, and are effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions. n
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or IOG limiting its scope, and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
If desired, the doors or roof-sections may be so hinged that they may be rolled back, and they Will preferably be made in sections hinged together, thus affording easier manipulation in opening and closing, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, what door in the side thereof and a movable sectional cover for the car, a locking-rod having Y engaging devices for the respective sections I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a car, of a series of doors closing the top thereof, and a staple or keeper on each door, of a common lockingbar mounted on the side of the car and having a series of engaging devices for the staples or keepers of the respective doors7` substantially as set forth.
2. The combination With a car, a door in the side thereof and aseries of doors adapted to cover the car, of a common locking-rod.
constructed to engage and lock the various top or cover doors and also the door in the side of the car.
3. The combination with a car and rafters gaging device for each door and a seal connected with each bar or rod and adapted to normally prevent the same from being turned, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a coal-car, of a of the cover, an arm projecting from said locking-rod and adapted to receive a keeper on the door in the side of the car and a seal adapted to prevent disengagement of said arm, substantially as set. forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specication in thef presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT VALLACE.
