WAGON-BOX.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application filed. June 14, 1915. Serial No. 34,078.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. REICHARD, a citizen of the United States residing at Hailey, in the county of Blaine and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Wagon-Box, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a wagon box, and one object of the invention is to provide a wagon box having a slat-formed or open bottom, to the end that loose material may sift therethrough, novel means being provided for retaining the loose material and for dumping the same at intervals.
It is Within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertalns.
With the above and other objects in wow which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and 1n the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying draw1ngs:-F1 gure 1 shows the invention in top plan; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a cross section; Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing a modified form of the invention.
In carrying out the invent on there is provided a main frame comprising sides 1 and ends 2 connected with the sides 1. Superposed upon the main frame above described is an auxiliary frame, comprising a plurality of cross bars 3 and longitudinal slats 4c resting upon and secured to the crossbars 3, the cross bars resting lmmediately on the sides 1 of the main frame. Hooks 5 are pivoted at their outer ends to the outermost longitudinal slats 1, as indicated at 6, and are adapted to engage detachably with eyes 7 on the outer faces of the sides 1 of the main frame, thereby to prevent the auxiliary frame from moving with respect to the main frame.
A pair of outer, intermediate doors 8 are provided, he doors 8 being connected by means of hinges 9 with the sides 1 of the main frame. The doors 8 when in closed positions extend upwardly and are united with the auxiliary frame by means of hooks 10, pivoted to the outer edges of the doors 8 and adapted to coact with projections 11 on the outermost slats at. Outer, end doors 18 are provided, these doors being hinged to the sides 1, like the doors 8 and being secured to the outermost slats 4 of the auxil-' along their meeting edges, the under faces of the doors 12 carrying keepers 15 adapted to receive bolts 16, to the end that the doors 12 may be held in closed, horizontally disposed positions as shown in Fig. 3. Inner, end doors 17 are provided, these doors being hinged to the sides 1 of the main frame after the manner of the doors 12. To the edges of the doors 17 may be pivoted hooks 19 adapted to be engaged by projections 20 on the outer faces of the ends 2 of the main frame.
The doors 8 and 18 upon the one hand and 12 and 17 upon the other hand are spaced from each other longitudinally of the frame, so as to receive the bolsters 21 upon which the wagon box is supported.
In practical operation, the inner, intermediate doors 12 are held in closed, horizontally disposed positions by means of bolt and keeper constructions 15-16. The inner, end doors 17 are held in closed, horizontal positions by means of the hooks 19 which engage with the projections 20, on the ends 2 of the main frame. The main frame, comprising the sides 1 and the ends 2, therefore, is completely closed in at its bottom. Further, the outer, intermediate doors 8 and the outer, end doors 18 are upheld in the inclined positions, by means of the hooks 10. The loose material in the load which is carried by the auxiliary frame will sift through auxiliary frame and be caught by the doors 1217818. At any time, these doors may be permitted to assume vertical positions by unlatching the hooks 10 and 19, and by disengaging the bolts 16 from the keepers 15. Any loose material which may be accumulated on the doors will, therefore, be dumped.
In the foregoing description it has been presupposed that the main frame and the auxiliary frame are detachably connected but, as shown in Fig. 4, the main and auxiliary frames may be built together and be permanently connected in any desired manner. In Fig. 4:, one of the sides corresponding to the element 1, is denoted by the numeral 50, one of the cross bars being shown at 51, and the numeral 52 denoting one of the longitudinal slats, there being provided connecting elements 53 of any desired sort and, if preferred, in the form of connecting bolts uniting the parts above alluded to.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a main frame; an open, slat-formed auxiliary frame supported on the main frame; swinging doors connected with the main frame 1 and constituting a closure for the bottom of the main frame; doors hinged to the main frame and extended beneath the auxiliary frame at the sides of the main frame and copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the means for connecting the last specified doors detachably with the auxiliary frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a
main frame; doors hinged to the main frame \VILLIAM H, REICHARD.
