Description

-'I'.' T. BUTLER.
GORN-PLAN'TERS.
No. 195,442, Patented. Sept.25,1877.
WITNESSES INVENTCR ATTORNEYS N-PEI'ERS. PHUTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES THOMAS T. BUTLER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF LODA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,442, dated September 25, 1877; application filed August 16, 1877.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS THEODORE BUTLER, of Loda, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Corn-Planters or Spring Support and Start for Slide Bar and Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved corn-planter, and Fig. 2 an end view of the same.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in corn-planters particularly adapted to that class having a check-rower and it consists in suspending the seed-slide or shakingbar by means of a spring or springs, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the seed-boxes of a corn-planter of the Haworth make, and B to a board or seat secured upon the said boxes. In the said board are covered openings, through which the boxes may be filled.
0 refers to the shaking-bar or seed-slide, which passes through and projects beyond the seed-boxes A A.
Upon the upper side of the slide 0 is socured a bar or stop, to limit the endwise movement of the slide in agitating or shaking the seed in the boxes A A.
The slide or bar 0 is suspended in position by a spring, D, one end of which is connected to the lower side of the board or seat B, and the other end to the said slide at a point about equidistant between its ends.
By thus suspending the seed-slide, it will be observed that the frictional contact between it and the seed-boxes through which it passes is greatly reduced, and the movement thereof rendered more sensitive, the lifting-power of the spring taking the weight of the bar or slide off the boxes, and the great strain upon the check-rower removed. The function of this spring is, also, to assist in returning the slide, after the release of one end thereof, toward its central or nominal position, when its other end is engaged by the check-rower.
Two or more additional springs may be used, if desired, one being attached to each end of the slide or bar 0.
Having thus described my in vent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a corn-planter, the seed slide or shaking-bar, in combination with, and suspended in position by, one or more springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a corn-planter, the spring D, in combination with the seed-slide or shaking-bar C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS THEODORE BUTLER.
