UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI EGKEB'L OE GONSTANTINE, MICHIGAN.
fMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-SWINGERS FOR STORE-COUNTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217.077, dated J nly 1, 1879 application filed May 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI EGKERT, of Constantine, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Swingers for Store-Counters, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to that class of devices for swinging out barrels from under counters in which the barrel is held at top and bottom by independent revoluble grapples.
My invention particularly relates to the construction of the grappling devices,'which construction avoids all fastening to the barrel, as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represeutsa view, in perspective, of the rear side of a store-counter having a barrel-swinging apparatus of my invention; Fig. 2, a detail of the top grappling device, and Figs. 3 and 4 details of two forms of bot-tom grapples.
In these drawings, A represents the top slab of a store-counter, and B the floor or a platform.
Depending from the under side of slab A is a stem, 0, which is provided with a baseflange, K, and secured to said slab by screws to a of said flange, or in any approved manner, so that it will be firmly held. This stem is of sufficient length to project below and outside of the barrels top. It carries an angular grapple, D, provided with a sleeve, b, which braces said grapple upon the stem, upon which the grapple can be turned and adjust itself by gravity to different barrels. The stem 0 of this upper grapple, D, is braced by its base-plate K. and forms thereby a firm fixture to the counter.
Upon the floor or platform is a bed-piece, E, secured by screws 0 c, or in any suitable manner. Said bed-piece has a raised hearing, m, preferably annular, within which is a socket, d, for the reception of the stem t of a bottom grapple, G, wherebysaid grapple may rotate. r
This grapple G is a casting, having a long tine, f, to grasp the outside of the barrel and form a rest thereto, and a short tine, g, to grasp the chine, which latter is supported in the recess formed by said tines. The bottom of this grapple G has a cylindrical base or hub, L, to form a continuous bearing operating upon the hearing at of the bed-piece. Thus the grapple and bed-piece come in direct bearing contact, and the stem i acts only as the means of revolution. This construe tion is necessary to support the heavy weight of the barrel.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of this grapple, wherein the socket d is in the grapple and the stem t in the bed-piece.
It will be seen from this descriplion that I fasten nothing to the barrel, but support the latter by a solidhubbed base-grapple having an annular face-bearing, while at the top the barrel is supported by a stem permanently secured and braced to the counter.
The sleeve of the top grapple is important, in that it braces and guides the revolution of the top annular grapple.
The barrel is first taken and lifted so that its bottom chine will rest in the socket of the bottom solid-hubbed grapple and be held from lateral displacement by its tines. The top grapple is then pushed up until it can grasp the inner side of the barrels top, and the barrel is held and capable of being swung out and in.
The pin 0 may or may not have a headed termination to prevent the sleeved grapple from falling off in changing barrels.
The barrel may be removed by simply pushing up the top grapple to release it.
I claim 1. In a device for swinging barrels from understore-counters, the upper grappling device, consisting of the stem (1, with a base,
K, by which it is permanently secured and braced to the counter, and a grapple, D, provided with a bracing-sleeve, b, in combination with the lower grapple, G, substantially as described.
2. In a device for swinging barrels from under counters, the lower grappling device, G, consisting of a casting formed with the tines fg, and a cylindrical-base bearing-hub, 1, whereby to form a continuous solid hearing upon the bed-piece E, provided with the annular bearin g m, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of April, A. D. 1879.
LEVI EOKER-T.
