Description
' yUNITED STATES PATENT @eineno `GEORGE RAGE, OF NORWICH, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-LOADERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,084, dated April 17, 1866.
-Improvement in Hay-Loaders for Loading Hay onto Wagons, Snc.; and l do hereby declare thattlie following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this speci-- tcation, in which it is shown in a perspective View.
A represents the hay-ladders of a wagon, on the rear end of which is erected a perpendicular post, B. The top of this post is furnished with a journal for receiving a socket on the end of the arm U, which revolves freely horizontally. To the opposite end of this revolv ing arm C is suspended liexibly by a cord the lever D, from which is in like manner suspended the fork E.
I so adjust the cord or other support of the lcverD that when not in use the fork will hang horizontally, or nearly so.
The lever D is united flexibly at one end to the handle of the fork, near the fork, by a short cord, and near the other end of the handle by a cord of such length as to permit the end of the lever to be seized by one hand of the operator, when the other grasps the end of the handle of the fork, the arms being extended. The lever D and fork-handle E, thus connected, form a compound lever, the leverD being a lever of the lirst order and the fork-handle E being a lever of the third order.
In the ordinary arrangement the fork is sus pended from the arm by a cord, forming a simple lever of the first order, and the measure of elevation is the sweep of the fork, while by means of the compound lever, after the fork has been carried to its highest point, swinging upon its fulcrum, I am enabled to raise it to the extent of the sweep of the lever D, thus carrying it above the load without lifting directly from the end of the fork-handle. The arm C turning freely on its journal, the hay thus raised may be carried to any part of the wagon without throwing the suspending-cord out of the perpendicular.
. What I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the arm O, the 'lever D and pitchfork E, suspended substantially in the manner and used for the purpose setforth.
2. So suspending the fork E, when used in combination with the lever D, that by means of a freely revolving arm, G, the load upon the fork may be carried .to any required point within the sweep of the arm, substantially in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE RACE.
