Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM PATTERSON, OF ONEONTA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANIMAL POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,922, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PATTERSON, of the town of Oneonta, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Utilizing the Power of a Dog or other domestic animals for the purpose of churning or performing various other kinds of labor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure I is a top view of my improved treadwheel dog-power. Fig II is a vertical section ofthe saine taken on the plane of the line X X. Fig. III is the pivoted spindle-box provided with lugs a a..
A in Fig. I of the drawing represents the tread or platform-wheel, provided with the opening B in the center to receive the upper end of the spindle C, by which the tread-wheel is supported in the center, its outer edge or rim resting on a iiange or small projecting rim of the balancewheel D, to which mot-ion and power are given by friction caused by the motion and weight applied to the rim or outer edge of the tread-wheel by the animal walking upon the side next the balancewheel, from which power may be transmitted to any suitable machinery. E is a circular disk or metal plate, which holds the inner ends of the boards forming the floor of the tread-wheel in pla ce by being bolted to the ring or circular plate F, shown in Fig. II, thus iirinly securing the ends ot boards between them. G, Fig. II, is a cross-support, provided with holes or sockets to receive the foot of the spindle O and -give the tread-wheel the proper inclination. H, Fig. III, is a self-adjusting pivoted spindle-box, resting on suitable bearings, and holdin g the supporting-spindle nea-r its upper end, the whole being arranged and operating substantially as described, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I.v The pivoted spindle-box H, provided with lugs a a to support it, and allow the inclination ofthe spindle to be easily changed.
2. The cross-support G, provided with holes or sockets to hold the foot of the spindle C in position.
3. The spindle O, provided with projecting hooks c c at its upper end to secure it to the plate E, the whole arranged and operating substantially as described, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
WILLIAM PATTERSON.
Witnesses C. L. MICHAEL, JOHN W. VAUGHAN.
