WIRE-TIGHTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 31, 1911. Serial No. 641,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER I-I. DEHLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosholt, in the county of Por tage, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Tighteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in ratchets adapted for the purpose of tightening and keeping thoroughly stretched any strand of wire required to be kept tight, such as for instance, strands employed in wire fences.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a ratchet for the purpose described which is constructed from a single casting, and is formed to permit of the same being readily operated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the
, invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
'In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention showing the same attached to a wire, Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 4 is another elevation taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises a ratchet formed from a single casting and consisting of a flat body portion 5 having a substantially semi-circular peripheral edge 6 and a straight edge 7. Projecting from one face of the body portion and concentric with the edge 6 thereof Copies 01'. this patent may be obtained for is an angular stud 9 adapted for engagement with a socket of a brace (not shown). Projecting from the marginal edge of the other face of the body portion are spaced ratchet teeth 10.
Projecting from the front face of the body portion 5 is a spool 11, the spool projecting oppositely from the stud 9 and 0E- set therefrom. The rear end of the spool is formed with a projection 12, which ex tends to one side of the stud 9 and in rear of the plate 5, and has a flat face 13. Formed in this end of the spool is a transverse slot 14, one wall thereof forming a continuation of the straight edge 7 of the plate 5 for receiving a strand of wire 15.
In practice, the strand of wire is positioned within the slot 14 and the opposed ratchet teeth 10 are disposed on one side of the wire and the spool 11 disposed on the other side of said wire. The device is then rotated by means of a brace and as the plate 5 thus rotates the wire is wound upon the spool 11 and is held in such relation by means of the ratchet teeth 10, one of which is always disposed above the wire and another below the wire as above noted.
What is claimed is A wire tightener formed from a single casting and consisting of a flat body portion having a substantially semi-circular peripheral edge and a straight edge, an angular stud projecting from one face of the body portion and disposed concentric with the peripheral edge thereof, a plurality of ratchet teeth projecting from the marginal edge of the other face of the body portion, a spool projecting from the last mentioned face of the body portion and also projecting oppositely from the stud and ofiset from the latter, the inner end of the spool being formed with a projection having a flat face, the inner end of the spool being formed with a transverse slot, one wall thereof forming a continuation of the straight edge of the body portion for receiving a strand of wire.
