Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE Fa. ALLEN, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Log Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to log rests used in fire places and the like, my more particular purpose being to provide a type of log rest suitable for use in connection with gaseous fuel, and having a so-called knockdown construction whereby the rest may be readily folded and unfolded for convenience in packing and shipping.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding part-s in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of my improved log rest, in this instance the various parts occupying their normal positions as when the log rest is in use for supporting a log or an imitation thereof; Fig. 2 shows the device appearing in Fig. 1, but with the parts folded or knocked down ready for shipping.

The mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is made up principally of plain bar iron which may be of substantially uniform width and thickness. Two bars 3, 4 are provided with portions 5 turned down substantially at a right angle, these down-turned portions being provided with holes 6. The bars 3, 4 are provided with slots 7, 8. 'Bolts 9, 9* are provided with revoluble nuts 10, 10"? for connecting together the various parts.

At 11 are two fire dogs each provided with legs 12, 13 integral therewith and also provided with holes. The bolts 9 extend through holes inthe bars 3, 4 and the fire dogs 11, as shown in Fig. 1, these bolts being secured by aid of the nuts 10.

The bolts 9" extend through the slots 7. 8 in the bars 3, 4, and are secured by aid of the nuts 10'. By loosening the nuts 10 the bars 3, 4 may be adjusted relatively to each other in the general. direction of their common length, and after such adiustment. by tightening the nuts 10*, the bars 3, 4 are held rigidly in position. By loosening either nut 10 and removing the corresponding bolt 9, the adjacent fire dog 11 may be placed in either of two positions, as indicated respectively in Figs. 1 and 2, and locked securely when so placed.

Each leg 13 is provided with a hole adapted to register with a corresponding hole 6 in the downturncd portion 5 of one of the bars 3, at. Each bolt 9 may be shifted from its position indicated in Fig. 1 and extended through one of the holes 6 and through a hole in the lire dog, and secured by the nut 10 so as to hold the parts in the positions indicated in Fig. 2.

Then the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the device is in condition to support gas logs, say in a fire-place. When, however, the parts are shifted so as to occupy the positions indicated in Fig. 2, the device is in its so-called knock-clown condition-that is, folded into its smallest compass and ready for shipping.

Assuming the device to be in the condition indicated in Fig. 1 and the operator wishing to fold or pack it ready for ship ment, he merely loosens the nuts 10, takes out the bolts 9, turns the dogs 11 relatively to the bars 3, 4 into the positions indicated in Fig. 2, and re-inserts the bolts 9 through the proper holes. In order to shift the parts back into the position indicated in 1, the operator pursues the reverse course.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A gas log rest, comprising a pair of bars, means controllable at will for securing said bars together in order to adjust the aggregate length thereof. said bars adjacent to their outer ends being provided with turned down portions, and further provided with holes adjacent to said turned down portions and with other holes through said turned down portions, and fire dogs each provided with a hole adapted for registering with either of said first-mentioned holes.

whereby said fire dogs may each be adapted to occupy two definite positions relatively to said bars in order to enable said fire dogs to be folded or unfolded relatively to said bars.

2. A gas log res-t, comprising a pair of bars. means controllable at will for securing said bars together in order to adjust the aggregate length thereof. said bars adiacent to their outer ends being provided with turned down portions, and further provided with holes adjacent to said turned down portions, and with other holes through said turned down poltions and extending in a different direction from said first mentioned holes, and fire dogs each having substan tially a U form and provided with a hole for registering with either of said first mentioned holes, as desired, whereby said fire dogs may each be adapted to occupy two definite positions relatively to said bars in order to enable said fire dogs to be folded or 10 unfolded relatively to said bars.
