T. ADAMS, Jr.
FOLDING CLOTHES RACK.
A 'IIHIHILi-.n IlIlIHIIlIIINHIIIIl|MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlI WITNESSES INVENTUR ld-,f f A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ADAMS, JR., OF HIGHLAND, NEIV YORK.
FOLDING CLOTHES-RACK.
Application filed Marchl. 1885.
fo aZZ who-nt it may concern: l
Be it known that I, THOMAS ADAMS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident l of Highland, in the county of Ulster and State l of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Clothes- Backs; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which I Figure lis a perspective view showing n'iy improved clothes rack extended and ready for use. Fig. 2 is an end view of the'same, with dotted lines showing the arms 1n position ready to be folded; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device folded for storage or transportation.
The saine letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to folding clothesracks; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess points of simplicity, durability, incxpensiveness, and general efficiency.
lith these ends in view it consists in the improved construction, arraiigeiiient, and coinbination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A, A designate the heads or ends of my improved clothes-rack, which consist of horizontal bars B B, having centrally -located vertical uprights, C C, the upper ends of which, as well as the ends of the horizontal bars B B, are coniiected by transverse bars or braces D and E. E.
Upon the ends of the arms E E, adjoining the inner sides of the cross-piecesB B, are pivoted arms F F, the outer ends of which are connected by transverse braces G G, vupon which are pivoted additional arms, H H, connected by braces I I, the ends of which are constructed with dovetailed or arrow heads J.
K K aie the leg-frames, which are hinged to the under sides ofthe cross-pieces B B of the heads or ends in such a manner as to be caable of being folded inwardly as will be clearly seen with reference to Fig. of the drawings. The leg-frames are provided on their outer sides, near their upper ends, with dovetailed recesses L L, into which the ar- *PEGEPICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,011, dated March 16, 1886.
Serial No.159,6'28. (No model.)
row-heads J J may be inserted when the said leg-frames and the pivoted arms of the device are extended, as shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings, thereby bracing and securing the parts in an extended position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with t-he drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The coustruction is simple and inexpensive, the device is light and durable, and it may, when not in use, be folded, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to occupy but little space. Vhen the device is lthus folded, the leg-frames may be secured by means of ahook, M, hinged to one of theni, and adapted to be connected with a staple, N, secured to one of the crossbraces D.
I would have it understood that in the manufacture of this device I do not wish to limit myself to the identical or precise construction herein shown and described, but reserve to myself the right to all modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of iny invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a folding clothes-rack, the combination of the heads or ends, the inwardly-fold ing leg-frames hinged to the under edges of the same, and the pivotally-connected arms connected by cross-braces, and adapted to be connected with the leg-franies when the latter are extended, substantially as herein de scribed, for the purpose shown and specified.
2. In a folding clothes-rack, the combination of the heads or ends connected by cross braces, the inwardly-foldingleg-frames hinged to t-lie under edges of said heads or ends, arms pivoted to the outer braces, connected to the heads or ends, and having their free ends con' iiected by cross-braces, arms pivoted upon the said cross-braces, and having their free ends connected by crossbraces provided with dovetailed or arrow heads, and notches in the legframes adapted to receive the said heads, substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVitnesses: THOMAS ADAMS, JR.
SAML. CRAWFORD, GEORGE SAXTON.
