To all whom it'may concern:

Be it known that I, SARAH R. STEARNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Beach, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in trunks.

One object of the invention is to provide a trunk having means whereby the same may be supported at a convenient elevation thereby dispensing with the necessity of stooping when the trunk is being packed or unpacked, said means being adapted to be retracted to an inoperative or out of the way position when not in use, I

Another object is to construct and arrange the supporting devices in such manner that the same and the means for holding said devices will serve as braces for strengthening the corners of the trunk.

'Witn these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk having my invention applied thereto and showing the su iporling legs in an operative position to support the trunk at the desired elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail front view of the trunk with parts broken away showing the leg retracted to inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through one corner of the tru iii, the legand leg casing of the same.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, I provide each corner of the trunk with a combined. corner brace and leg receiving easing 1, said casing being formed from metal plates or bars bent longitudinail y at right angles and having their oppo site edges bent inwardly to form rooves or channels 2 with which are slidably engaged the supporting legs 3 of the trunk. The leg casing 1 may be secured to the sides of the trunk and over the corners thereof in any suitable manner. g

The supporting legs 3 are preferably constructed of angle iron bars :which closely engage and slide in the grooves 2 of the easing and between the latter and the adjacent sides of the trunk and out of contact therewith, whereby the angular bars may be cured to the trunk and the legs removably secured thereto adapted to be properly guided for the purposes set-forth. In order to secure the legs in position to support the trunk at a convenient elevation for packing or unpacking the same without stooping, I provide suitable leg fastening means here shown in the form of flat bolts 4 which are slidably mounted in suitable guides or keepers 5 secured to one side of the trunk. The inner ends of the bolts work through slots 6 formed in the adjacent edges of the casings and are adapted tobe engaged with. a series of notches 7 formed in the adjacent edge of the legs whereby the latter are held out in an operative position or are secured in a retracted or inoperative position in the caslngs.

In addition to the vertical corner braces formed by the leg casings 1 I also provide the horizontal corners of the trunk with similar angular bracing bars 8 whereby the strength and durability of the trunk may be greatly increased.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advan tages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.

1. In combination with the corners of a trunk, of right angular braces provided with inwardly turned edges, secured to the trunk and forming engaging channels, supporting legs freely received by said braces cated in the channels, whereby said legs are i trunk, of righ v trunk forming held out vof contact with the trunk, and
