UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RIES E. LEONARD, 0F WINTHROP, MASSACHUSETTS.
PORTABLE ILNOCKDOWN STOVE.
Application filed December 23, 191-4.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RIBS E. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winthrop, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Knockdown Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable knockdown stoves which may be quickly assembled and taken apart and conveniently transported for camp and army use, etc., and the object of my invention is to improve the con struction of such stoves in the manner hereinafter set forth.
An illustrative embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement; Fig.2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
In the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing my invention, 1 represents a base member having an upturned end flange 12, and provided with a plurality of slots 1' herein shown as two in number arranged near the outer edges of the sides thereof. The side members 2, 3, each having its front edge sloping upwardly as shown at 2, 3, are provided on their lower edges with lugs 5, 6 respectively, and on their upper edges with lugs 5, 6'. The lower lugs are arranged to cooperate with the slots 1', 1 of the base and the upper lugs take into correspondingly arranged slots 4, 4: cut into the top member 4. An end piece 11 provided with upper and lower flanges 11 closes one end of the stove, said flanges abutting the upturned end flange 12 of the base and the downturned flange 12 of the top. The legs 9 are each provided with a head 8 arranged as shown substantially at right angles to the leg and said head is bifurcated as shown at 7 to take the lower end of the bolts 6, which pass through the top and bottom portions, one at each corner thereof, and when the nuts 10 are tightened, bind the several portions of the stove together and secure the legs thereto. A vertically-swinging door 13 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
Serial No. 878,698.
is pivoted by the pins 14, preferably integral therewith, between the bottom and side por-' tions, said pins extending into the apertures 15 in the lower edges of the said members near the front ends thereof. When the door is closed, it is inclined rearwardly as shown, with its upper edge, which extends slightly above the top portion 4:, resting against the end of said top portion so that it is held in place by gravity. A plurality of plates 16, herein shown as two in number, rest on the flanges 1G to cover the holes in the top of the stove. A removable chimney 17 may be placed over the upwardly-extending collar 17 if desired.
To assemble the parts, the lugs of the side portions are first inserted in their slots in the base, the end portions and door secured in position and then the top placed so that the upper lugs of the side portions will enter the slots of the top. The bolts are then passed through the structure, the bifurcated heads of the legs slipped over the nuts as shown in Fig. 4, and the latter tightened, whereupon the stove is ready for use.
It will be seen that my improved stove can be quickly assembled and dismantled and readily arranged for transportation in a light, compact bundle having about one-sixth the volume of the stove when assembled.
Having thus particularly described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, without however limiting the same thereto, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A portable knock-down stove comprising bottom and top portions, each provided with slots, side portions provided with lugs engaging said slots, respectively, an end portion adapted to cooperate with said bottom, top and side portions, legs arranged to cooperate with said bottom portion, and bolts passing through said top and bottom poi-- tions and engaging said legs to bind all said portions together and to secure said legs to the stove.
2. A portable knock-down stove comprising bottom and top portions, each provided with slots, side portions provided with lugs engaging said slots, respectively, an end portion adapted to cooperate with said bottom, top and side portions, legs arranged to oooperate with said bottom portion, each leg In testimony whereof, I have hereunto having a bifurcated end extending at right subscribed my name this 22nd day of Deangles thereto, and bolts passing through cemloer, 1914.
said top and bottom portions and through RIES E. LEONARD. the bifurcated ends of said legs to bind a1] Witnesses:
said portions together and to secure said legs GEO. K. \VOODWORTH,
to the stove. E. B. TOMLINSON.
