Application filed September 18, 1916. Serial No. $120,795.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED W. Toner, a Gilil. zen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful. 1m-, provements in Cabinets, of which the folk lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cabinets.
Myimprovements are especially designed by me for embodiment in cabinets, such as book cases, and the like, and I have illus trated such an embodiment herein.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved sectional cabinet which may be extended laterally as occasion requires and has the appearance of a unitary structure.
Second, to provide an improved structure of the class described in which the cabinet units may be uniformly constructed and the design of the structure as a whole varied by means of interchangeable end or pilaster frames.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is simple and economical in its parts and readily assembled and changed as occasion requires.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the cl aims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, inwhich:
Figure I is a front detail perspective of a structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail vertical sec tion on a line corresponding to line 2-e2, of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a detail perspective view showing one of the end .or pilaster frames and the end of a cabinet unit separated.
Fig. IV is a perspective view showing one of the end panels and one of the pilaster frames separated, the end panel being shown in position in the frame by dotted lines.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

net units 1: comprising top 2, bottom 3, and end walls 4:. These units may be provided with doors 5 if desired. The shelving of the cabinets is not illustrated as this may be varied as desired and forms no part of my present invention. The bottom 3 is provided with longitudinal rails 6 and cross pieces 7. I .rovide end frames, designated generally y the numerals 8, and comprising uprights 9 top rails 10 and bottom rails 11. The frames are preferably provided with struts 12 disposed centrally on edge below and above the to and bottom rails respectively (see Fig; 'II). The uprights in the structure illustrated are extended below the bottom rails 11 to provide legs 13. Bloc {3 let are arranged below the bottom rails to assist in supporting the same.
The cabinet units are arranged end to end and the end orpilaster frames 8 are an ranged between the units and at the outer ends of the outer units. Any desired number of units may be provided and the number may be changed as desired. The units are arranged with their ends within the end frame or pilaster members abutting the struts thereof. The cabinet members have rabbet-like recesses 15 and 16 for the top and bottom rails 10 and 11 respectively. The end panels 17 and the cabinet units are interchangeable in the frames, that is, the frames are adapted to receive a cabinet unit on each side, as the intermediate frame member in the structure shown in Fig, I, or
to receive a cabinet unit on one side and a 7 panel on the other.
I have not illustrated the means for securing the frames and units together as such means will be readilyunderstood.
In practice an installation may consist of a single cabinet unit or any number desired and the number may be increased or diminished as occasion requires. The end panels being removable, it is only necessary to provide a pair of panels for each unitary struc ture or series of cabinets. of difierentdesigns may be used or frames of different designs substituted to adapt the structure to furnishings. These features are not only of advantage to the user but also to the merchant who is enabled to carry in stock a limited number of cabinet units and also to carry different designs of pilaster frames so that structures may be assembled to meet the requirements of particular 011$".
V t rriers.
Further, frames I have illustrated and described my impro vements mainly in onventional form and wlthout an attempt to maintain proper proportions of parts and also without showing the means for securing the parts together. as
I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to whichmy inven-" tion relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
. Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1
1. In a structure of the class described,
the combination of a plurality of cabinet units comprising top, bottom and end walls,
frames adapted to receive the adjacent ends of a pair of units or the end of a unit" and an end panel and comprising uprights, top and bottom rails, and struts disposed centrally on edge below and above said top and bottom rails respectively, said frames being arranged between sald units and at the outer ends of the outer units, said units being dis posed with their ends in said frames abutting their said. struts and being provided with rabbet-hke recesses for the sa d ra1ls,and end panels arranged within the outer frames.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a plurality of cabinet units comprising top, bottom and end walls, frames adapted to receive the adjacent ends of a pair of units or the end of a unit and anend paneland comprising uprights, top and bottom rails, and struts disposed centrally on edge below and above said top and bottom rails respectively, said frames being arranged. .between'said units and at the outer ends of the outer unlts, sald-unlts be ing disposed with their ends in said frames,-
the combination of a plurality of cabinet units, frames adaptedv to receive the adja-' cent ends of a pair of units or the end. of a unit and an end panel, said frames being arranged between. said units and at the outer ends of the outer units, and end panels arranged within the outer frames.
5. In a strnctureof the'class described, the combination of a plurality of cabinet units, frames arranged between said units and at the outer ends of the outer units,
class described,the
and end panels for the outer frames, said units and endpauelsbeing interchangeable in said frames.
6. In a structure of the class described, thecombination of end frames comprising uprights, top and bottom rails, and struts disposed centrally below and above said topand bottom rails respectively, a unit comprising top, bottom and end walls disposed with its ends in said frames and abutting said struts, said unitbeing provided at its ends with rabbet-like recesses with which said rails alre engaged, and end panels arranged within the frames on the outer sides of said struts. i
7. In a structure. ()fztl'ldfiliiL-JS described, the combination of end frames comprising uprights, top and bottom rails, and struts disposedcentrally below and above said top and. bottom rails respectively, a unit comprising top, bottom and end walls disposed with its ends in said frames and abutting said struts. and end panels arranged within the frames on the outer sides of said struts.
8. In astructurepf the class described, the combination of end frames comprising uprights, top and bottom rails, and struts disposedcentrally below and above'said top and bottom railsrespectively, saiduprights being extended below said bottom rails to provide legs, a unit coi'nprisingtop, bottom and end walls disposed with its ends in said frames and abutting said struts, and end panels ,detachably arranged .within the frames on the outer sides of said struts.
, 9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of end frames adapted to detachablv receive the ends of a cabinet unit or an. end panel, a cabinet unit disposed with its ends in said frames, and end panels detachably arranged within the; frames.
10. A structure of the class described comprising in combination,.a plurality of cabinet units, end frames andend panels, all deta-chably associated, the end frames being adapted to detachably receive on either side a cabinet unit or an! end panel, all coacting for the purpose specified. 1 I
11. A structure'of the class described comprising in combination, a cabinet unit, end frames and end panels, the end frames being; adapted to receive on. either side a cabinet unit or an end panel, .all detachably associated to permit manipulation thereof, for the purpose specified.
In witnesswhereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
