STAND FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 9, 1917. Serial N 0. 185,374.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES H. LAMONT, citizen of the United States, resident of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Stands for Musical Instruments; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, showing the horn of the musical instrument in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention, with the upperhead removed.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the invention folded.
Fig. 4 is a detail side View of the latch member.
The invention has relation to stands for musical instruments, having for its object to provide a stand designed to fold into small compass for placing in the pocket of the owner or other convenient place, and when unfolded, for the use of orchestral clarinet players who are obliged to use two instruments, one of which is required to be located safely in a convenient place, where it can be quickly reached when the time comes to change instruments.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferable embodiment of the invention, the numeral 2 designates a tripod, having feet 3, pivoted at their upper ends at 4 to the central body member 5, the latter having centrally thereof a vertical aperture or seat 6, wherein is located permanently thelower end of a vertical rod 7.
Sliding upon this rod is a collar 8, to which are pivoted at 9 the upper ends of arms or bars 10, three in number, the lower ends of said bars being pivoted at 11 to the feet 3 of the tripod, intermediately of the lengths of said feet.
The vertical rod 7 is provided at its upper end with a head 12 of suitable cushioning material, round in horizontal cross-section and the peripheral surface of which is rounded vertically, this head being designed to fit within the horn of the instrument, to uphold the latter in vertical position, the exterior or flaring end of the horn of the instrument being engaged interiorly by cushion blocks 13, three in number and borne by the arms or bars 10 intermediately of the lengths of the latter.
In order to retain the stand unfolded, and to prevent any movement of the parts to fold, a releasable latch device 1 1 is provided, usually pivoted to the collar 8 at 15 and having a lower hooked end 16, designed to engage beneath the lower shoulder 17 of a fixed collar 18 upon the rod 7, the upper shoulder 19 of said fixed collar serving as a stop for the collar 8 to limit the movement of the parts when the device is unfolded.
In folding the device, the legs will fold first outwardly and then inwardly, parallel with the central rod, and the bars or links 10 will fold inwardly, parallel with said rod, the legs folding inwardly, from their lower ends as centers, and the links folding in wardly from their upper ends as centers, the pivotal points l, 11 and 9 being in line with each other, so that the parts will be held in folded position until the central pivotal points 11 are bowed outwardly, out of line with the pivotal points 9 and 4.
I claim A stand for musical instruments of the wind type, comprising an upright rod, an annular centering head carried by said rod at the upper end thereof, inclined legs connected to and supporting said rod, and cushion blocks carried by said legs intermediately of the lengths thereof, said head having a rounded peripheral surface for engagement -with the throat of the horn of the instrument and said blocks having inclined outer surfaces for engagement with the mouth portion of said horn.
