CARL GUSTAF. RUNDGVIST, OF ATLANTIC CITY, NEV JERSEY.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,159, dated January 13, 1903.
Application filed April 22,1902. Serial No. 104,141. (No model.)
To all whom/'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL GUsrAE RUND- GVIST, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Atlantic City, county of Atlantic, and State of New Jersey, have invented a` certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Cots, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in folding cots, and has for its object to provide a cot which may be folded into a very small space, so as to be compact for transportingfroin one place to another, but when extended and set up will be as stable and efficient in action as an ordinary solid cot.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand howto make and use the same, the coustruction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Y Figure A1 represents a side elevation of the cot set up; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the cot; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4, a sectionon the line4 40E Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a detail view showing the tool used for tightening the stretcher; Fig. 6, a detail view showing themanner in which the headrest is attached to the side rails of the cot; Fig. '7, a perspective view of one of the side rails, the stretcher, and one ofthe folding supports, all folded ready for transportation.
In the drawings, A represents the side rails of the cot, which are formed in two parts, the parts being hinged together at the point B, and these two parts are adapted to Abe heldin alinement with one another when extended by means of the hooks C upon each side of the side rails, which hooks are pivoted to one part of the side rails and adapted to hook over a pin in theother part. One end of each of the side rails has formed through it square openings, in which are adapted to be inserted the square trunnions D of a circular cross-piece D', to which is attached one end of a stretcher E, consisting of canvas or like flexible material. The other end of the side rails A have formed through them circular openings in which are adapted to it the hubs F of ratchetwheels F'. These hubs F have an annular groove formed in the same, and threaded through the end of the side rails are screws F2, the ends of which are adapted to extend in the annular grooves, and thus hold the ratchet-wheels in place upon the ends of the side railsto allow rotary movement of said ratchetwheels. Through the hub F and ratchet-wheels F' are formed 'square openings in which are adapted to' fit 'square studs G of the roller G', which extend between the side rails. To this roller is secured the other end of the stretcher E, and when it is desired to tighten the stretcher a tool H, such as illus- I, pivoted Yto the side rails and engaging the ratchet-wheels, prevent any retrograde movement after the stretcher has been tightened upon the outside ofthe side rails. Near each end are secured tapering sockets J, in which are adapted to be inserted the tapering uplofthese strips to each two legs of the cot,
and each set of two cross-strips cross one another and are pivoted together at the center at the point L'. The other end of each of the cross-strips L has secured thereto right-angle lipsL2, which are adapted to'be inserted in eyes or clips' M, secured to the inner side of each of the side rails. Thus the folded support, composed of the legs K and crossstrips L, will not only supportthe cot, but will keep the side rails from spreading by reason vof the lips L2 being inserted in the eyes or clips M, and when thecot is properly set up it will make a very solid structure.
N Ais a head-rest which is secured to inclined blocks N upon each side, and the under side of these blocks are recessed at N2, and in the recess is provided a short rod N3, which is adapted to enteran eye O, secured to one end of each ofthe side rails .upon their upper surface. Thus by inserting therod N3 IOO into the eye upon each side the head-rest is secured to the cot, and it can be quickly and easily removed at any time.
When it is desired to fold the cot, each of the folding supports is removed from the side rails by removing the lips L2 from the eyes or clips M and removing the legs from the sockets J. Each of these supports can then be folded, as shown in Fig. '7. Then the side rails are free to be spread so that the circular cross-piece D can be removed, as also the roller G, and the stretcher can then be rolled upon one of the rollers, as shown in Fig. 7, and then by unhooking the hooks C of the side rails said side rails can be folded, as shown in Fig. 7. When all the parts are thus folded, they may be packed in a comparatively small space, and a bag or covering could be provided for holding the different parts with a strap passing around the same for carrying, or all the parts could be packed in an ordinary trunk.
Of course I do not Wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is l. In a folding cot, side rails, each composed oftwopartshinged togetherat the under side of the side rails, means for securing the two parts of the side rails in line with one another, a removable cross-piece secured between the side rails at one end, a removable roller secured between the side rails at the other end, a stretcher attached at one end to the cross-piece and at the other end to the roller, a ratchet-wheel secured to the roller, a pawl pivoted to the side rails and adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet-Wheel to prevent retrograde movement of the roller, tapering sockets secured upon the outside of the side rails near each end, legs having tapering upper ends adapted to itin the tapering sockets, cross-pieces, each cross-piece pivoted at one end to the legs near their lower end, said cross-pieces crossing and pivoted together in the center, right-angle lips secured to the other end of the cross-pieces, eyes or clips Secured to the inner end of each of the side rails into which the lips are adapted to t, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a folding cot, two side rails pivoted at the center and hinged together upon the under side, hooks pivoted to one member of each side rail and adapted to hook over pins secured to the other member, aV cylindrical cross-piece extending between the side rails at one end, square studs at each end of said cylindrical cross-piece adapted to tin square openings formed in the side rails, ratchet- Wheels arranged at the opposite end of the cot, said ratchet-Wheels having hubs journaled within the ends of the side rails, annular grooves formed in the hubs, screws threaded through the side rails and entering the annular grooves, a roller, square studs protruding from each end of the roller and adapted to enter square openings provided through the ratchet-wheel, pawls pivoted to the side rails and adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel, a stretcher secured at one end to the cylindrical cross-piece and at the other end to the roller, tapering sockets secured to the side rails near each end, legs having tapering upper ends adapted to fit in the sockets, cross-pieces pivoted at one end to the lower end of the legs and removably secured to the side rails at the other end, said cross-pieces being pivoted together at the center, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CARL GUSTAF RUNDGVIST.
