A syringe comprising a vial 10 closed at one end by a stopper 36 having a diaphragm 40 to be burst to eject fluid through the needle 12, includes a needle holder 20 having sharp projections 24 against which the diaphragm can be extended to ensure its rupture. The needle holder 20 is of rubber or transparent nylon and the rubber stopper 36 is formed with a circular groove 44 to ensure that the ballooning of the diaphragm under fluid pressure from the piston 42 is confined to a small central area. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the stopper (60) and a diaphragm puncturing member (58) are contained within the vial which is bonded directly to the needle. The stopper is then free to move within the vial to allow the syringe to be used for withdrawing fluid.
