Abstract

1,066,739. Surgical apparatus. JACUZZI BROS. Inc. Feb. 18, 1966 [Sept. 28, 1965], No. 7226/66. Heading A5R. Apparatus used to provide a steady flow of liquid for intravenous feeding or for use (Figures 6 and 7, not shown) in withdrawing a fluid from a body cavity, comprises an elastic container of pure surgical rubber able to maintain, while in a stretched state, a substantially constant pressure on any volume of liquid filling the container. As shown, for intravenous feeding, the elastic container 7 is closed at one end by a clamp 9 on which is a drawstring 45 and at its other end is fitted with a self-sealing plug through which the cannula 63 of a metering unit 3 can be fitted. The container 7 is within a flexible nylon jacket 39 and the metering unit is bayonet-fitted to the end of the jacket and contains a porous flowrestricting ceramic plug 71 and a filter 73. The container 7 is filled with the intra-venous fluid under pressure using an hypodermic syringe. The alternative apparatus Figures 6 and 7 (not shown), used for withdrawing fluid, comprises an elastic rubber container (75) fitted with an outer rigid jacket (79) the container being able to contract to eject liquid through an outlet valve (83) and thereby to induce fluid through a second valve (86) into the space formed between the container and the jacket.
