Abstract

1,140,299. Hypodermic syringes. I. SOLOWEY. 1 June, 1967, No. 25259/67. Heading A5R. A hypodermic syringe (see Figure 2) comprises a cylindrical barrel 10, a plunger 14 adapted to slide within the barrel, and a floating piston 40 sealingly slidable within the barrel and comprising a thin frangible diaphragm 22 made for example of rubber and mounted transversely of a hollow cylindrical member 20 also made for example of rubber. The floating piston divides the barrel into two chambers for carrying respectively two separate ingredients to be mixed together on rupture of the diaphragm, the chamber on the side of the floating piston nearer to the plunger containing liquid and the chamber on the side of the floating piston remote from the plunger containing gaseous medium and either a second liquid or powder. The hollow cylindrical member of the floating piston has an expansible waisted portion 41 (see Figure 4) whereby, on operation of the plunger by for example plunger arm 24 to increase the pressure within the barrel, the floating piston grips the inside wall of the barrel until the diaphragm is ruptured thereby to enable the two ingredients to mix. The plunger preferably is provided with a head which is shaped for engagement with the floating piston; as illustrated the plunger has a shoulder 25 defining a head 26 which is contoured to fit inside the cavity of the floating piston. In order to prevent removal of the plunger from the barrel, end 12 of the barrel preferably is provided with a closure member 14a having a central aperture 12a through which extends the plunger arm; the opposite end of the barrel is provided with a tip which is sealed, prior to use of the syringe, by a removable cap 18 and which is adapted, upon removal of the cap, to receive a hypodermic needle (not shown).
