Abstract
1,114,238. Hypodermic devices. S. J. SARNOFF. 31 Jan., 1967 [7 Feb., 1966], No. 4664/67. Heading A5R. An automatic infusion device comprises a syringe containing a liquid medicament and includes means for expelling the medicament from the syringe, the syringe either being connected (Figure 6, not shown) by a conduit to a restriction (92) of fixed size, a drop meter (90), and to an hypodermic needle (34), in that order, or being connected (Figure 4) to a second similar syringe containing a diluent and arranged such that the diluent can be expelled from the second syringe into the first and then the commingled medicament and diluent can be expelled for infusion through a needle. As shown, in the device comprising two syringes, each syringe includes a spring 76, 80 able to move a piston 64 to expel the contents of the syringe into a conduit, each piston having a rod 66 formed with a notch 74 which enengages the syringe end stopper so that, by removing a pin 78 and moving the rod slightly sideways, the piston is released. Each syringe is also closed by a stopper 44 having a rupturable or piercable membrane and the springs 76 are of equal or unequal strength. The medicament 86, or diluent 20 is contained by a piston 88, 42 to be moved by the pistons 64 and the medicament 86 is a fluid, powder or tablet. A regulator valve 32 is closed to effect the transfer of diluent 20 into the medicament syringe and the valve is then opened to effect the infusion of the diluted medicament through a restriction 92, a drop-meter 90 and a hypodermic needle 34. Each syringe stopper 44 is held by a cap 52 having a split skirt and by an outer sleeve 60.
