A cradle 19 for supplying ingots to a rolling mill is rockable about a horizontal pivot axis 20 which is retained in a bottom position by a catch 33 during tilting of the cradle into a vertical position beneath an ingot 2, whereupon the pivot 20 is released to enable the cradle to move substantially vertically to engage the ingot in a top position, in which position the pivot 20 is retained by a catch 35 during the lowering of the cradle. As described, the cradle 19 is raised by a rack 22 until a roller 26 engages a fixed plate 28 and a dog 19a on the cradle rides on an incline 33b of the catch 33, which is thereby released from the pivot 20. As the rack 22 is further moved, the cradle is moved vertically upwards with the roller 26 riding on the plate 28 to lift the ingot 2 off the ingot truck, whereupon a butt 35a of the catch 35 engages beneath the pivot 20 to lock it in position. After the ingot has been pushed on to the cradle by actuation of a ram 18 positioned on the ingot truck, the ingot is lowered on to a roller table 1. A lug 35b on the catch 35 is engaged by a dog 196 to release the catch 35 from the pivot 20, which is again locked by the catch 33.
