Abstract

626,356. Rollerway conveyers. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. Dec. 18, 1946, No. 37253. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1940. [Class 78 (i)] A work handling apparatus for use with a scalping machine of the type disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,326,847 comprises a normally horizontal conveyer table which is adapted to be inclined in either direction for delivery of workpieces there along and has component parts which are adapted to be moved in opposite directions with respect to each other to and from a co-operative, off-vertical position for inverting a workpiece deposited on the conveyer table by a co-operating work turning member or arm angularly movable with respect to the table. Ingots 12 are transferred from a tilting work table 15 to a scalping machine and later returned to the table for reversal by arms 25 which are pivoted about a shaft 26 by a piston and cylinder device 34. Mounted on these arms are a series of rollers 27, 28, 29, 30, arranged so that when the arms are vertical the ingot is engaged by the roller 28 which is adjustable and serves to locate the ingoton blocks 56 which are mounted on retractable fingers 36 controlled by a piston and cylinder device 40. The reversing arms 42 and 43 have rollers 16 on their upper surfaces and, when horizontal, form the surface of the table 15 the slope of which is controlled by a piston and cylinder device 22. Shafts 44 and 45 which are operatively secured to said reversing arms, are rotated by a piston and cylinder device 47 through a mechanism comprising a piston rod 49 a lever 50, a crank 51 a link 52, a crank 53 and gear segments 54 and 55, the arrangement being such that the two arms are rotated to a position in which they are parallel and in an off-vertical position so transferring an ingot from one arm to the other so that when the arms have been lowered the ingot has been turned over. Fully machined ingots are tipped from the table 15 on to a fixed receiving platform 5 from which they are removed by known means. The inclination of the arms 25 is controlled by members 66 which abut against stops 65 which are adjustable by means of gearing operated by a handwheel 67.
