Description
Aluminiumlegering med høyt oksydasjonspotensial,
særlig til bruk som offeranode.
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører galvaniske offeranoder, særlig en aluminiumlegering med høyt oksydasjonspotensial og høy elektrolytisk ytelse i forhold til metall-vekten, dvs. høy elektrokjemisk ekvivalent, særlig til bruk som offeranode.
Teoretisk sett skulle man vente at aluminium var tilfredsstillende som materiale til galvaniske anoder, da elementet aluminium tilfredsstiller to vesentlige krav til offeranoder, (1) høyt teoretisk oksydasjonspotensial (1,8 V i forhold til kalomel-referansen) og (2) stor teoretisk elektrisk ytelse pr. vektenhet av forbrukt metall (2,98 Ah/g). Det har imidlertid vist seg at aluminium ikke er tilfredsstillende, idet dette metall ikke tilnærmelsesvis gir de gunstige verdier som det teoretisk skulle gi når det anvendes som offeranode. Tilstede-værelsen av den normalt passive oksyda-sjonsoverflatefilm som aluminium alltid har, antas å virke som en sperre som re-duserer det effektive oksydasjonspotensial til ca. 0,7 V (målt i en sluttet krets ved 2,7 til 10,7 A/m 2 i syntetisk sjøvann som elektrolytt med en standard mettet KC1 kalo-mel-celle som referanse). Ved arbeidsspen-ninger med så lav verdi kan aluminiumet ikke yte noen katodisk beskyttelse til kon-struksjoner f. eks. på jernbasis. Anoden vil derfor ikke gi noen anvendbar elektrisk ytelse. Til sammenligning skal nevnes at arbeidspotensialet for magnesium er omkring 1,5 V og av sink omkring 1 V.
Det er kjent å tilsette visse elementer, såsom vismut, gallium eller indium, til aluminium i den hensikt å oppnå en alumi-niumanode som kan utnyttes kommersielt. Tilsetninger av denne art har imidlertid ikke vist seg kommersielt tilfredsstillende, idet der ikke oppnås noen merkbar økning i oksydasjonspotensialet sammen med en ønsket effektivitet.
Oppfinnelsen tar sikte på å skaffe en aluminiumlegering som kan anvendes til fremstilling av tilfredsstillende offeranoder, og i henhold til oppfinnelsen oppnås dette ved at aluminiumlegeringen inneholder 0,005 til 0,2 vektprosent gallium, 0,015 til 0,5 vektprosent indium, 0,02 til 3 vektprosent vismut, 0,02 til 3 vektprosent bly og resten aluminium.
Aluminiumlegeringen kan med fordel inneholde 0,01 til 0,03 vektprosent gallium, 0,02 til 0,3 vektprosent indium, 0,1 til 1 vektprosent vismut og 0,1 til 1 vektprosent bly.
Alle vektprosenter er basert på vekten
av den totale sammensetning.
Aluminiumlegeringen ifølge oppfinnelsen har på overraskende måte vist seg å kunne anvendes til offeranoder som gir et tilfredsstillende korrosjonsmønster, høyt arbeids-oksydasjonspotensial og stor elektrisk ytelse pr. forbrukt vektenhet av legeringen.
Galvaniske anoder kan fremstilles av den nye legering ved støpning eller annen fremstillingsteknikk kjent fra aluminium-industrien. Der trenges ingen spesiell be-
handling eller fremstilling.
Det aluminium som kan anvendes ved fremstilling av den nye legering, kan være av kommersiell type (99,5 til 99,9 pst. alu-
minium) med vanlig innhold av forurens-
ninger, hvor innholdet av silisium kan være opp til 0,22 vektprosent. Eventuelt kan der anvendes aluminium med høyere renhet (f. eks. 99,99 pst.), men det er ikke nød-
vendig for å oppnå de høye potensialer og gode effekter (f. eks. stort elektrolytisk utbytte pr. vektenhet av metallet). Lege-ringsmetallene kan være sådanne med stor renhet eller av vanlig handelskvalitet.
Den resulterende aluminiumlegering
vil ikke miste sin høye kvalitet ved lag-
ring i normal atmosfære som følge av luft-oksydasjon.
Eksempel:
Et antall anoder ble fremstilt ved at
aluminium av kommersiell kvalitet, 99,9
pst. renhet, ble smeltet i en grafittdigel anbragt i en elektrisk ovn. De nødvendige mengder gallium, indium, vismut og bly ble tilsatt det smeltede aluminium og godt innblandet i smeiten. Legeringen ble støpt i en grafittform i størrelsen av lengde 14
cm og diameter 1,6 cm. Kjøle- og stivne-hastigheten ble kontrollert og var av sam-
me art som ved fremstilling av vanlige anoder.
Hver av de sylindriske prøver ble som
anoder anbragt i en beholder av stål 40 og størrelse 7,6 cm diameter og 15,2 cm høyde. Beholderen utgjorde da katoden. Syntetisk
sjøvann ble benyttet som elektrolytt med ca. 10 cm av prøven neddykket. Cellene ble over en likeretter tilsluttet en vekselstrøm-
krets og strømmen ble holdt konstant gjen-
nom en gruppe seriekoblede celler.
Resultatet av et antall prøver med alu-
minium av handelskvalitet og de angitte tilsetninger, er angitt i etterfølgende tabell som viser oksydasjonspotensialer og den elektrolytiske ytelse pr. vektenhet (effek-
tiviteten) av de prøvede anoder.
Disse resultater viser klart hvor høye
de oppnådde oksydasjonspotensialer er og likeledes hvor høy den elektrokjemiske ek-
vivalent er sammenlignet med vanlig alu-
minium. Det bemerkes videre at den nye legerings oksydasjonspotensial og elektro-
lytiske ytelse ligger i de områder som er ønskelige når det dreier seg om offerano-
der.
Store anoder med D-formet tverrsnitt
og dimensjoner på ca. 9 cm diameter og 30 cm lengde ble fremstilt i henhold til oppfinnelsen inneholdende 0,02 vektpro-
sent gallium, 0,03 vektprosent indium, 0,5 vektprosent vismut og 0,5 vektprosent bly og resten aluminium. Etter å være utsatt for prøver i strømmende saltvann ca. 9
uker, viste disse offeranoder seg å være
meget tilfredsstillende, idet de hadde et potensial på 1,45 V og en ytelse på ca. 60
pst. Følgelig er legeringen meget anvende-
lig som offeranoder for katodisk beskyt-
telse, som galvaniske pigmenter i male-
filmer, galvaniske anoder for primærbatte-
rier og som offerovertrekk for stålplater og andre metaller som påføres aluminium på
katodisk vei. I tillegg hertil kan legerin-
gene anvendes som aktive stoffer i lysbom-
ber, ved kjemisk reduksjon og ved frem-
stilling av aluminiumalkyler.
Claims (2)
1. Aluminiumlegering med høyt oksy-dasjonspotential og høy elektrisk ekviva-
lent, særlig til bruk som offeranode, ka-
rakterisert ved at den inneholder 0,005 til 0,2 vektprosent gallium, 0,015 til 0,5 vektprosent indium, 0,02 til 3 vektprosent vismut, 0,02 til 3 vektprosent bly og resten aluminium.
2. Aluminiumlegering i henhold til påstand 1, karakterisert ved at den
inneholder 0,01 til 0,03 vektprosent gallium, 0,02 til 0,3 vektprosent indium, 0,1 til 1 vektprosent vismut og 0,1 til 1 vektprosent bly.
