Abstract

Se describe un proceso para la producción de ácido metacrílico. El proceso comprende la descarboxilación catalizada básica de al menos uno o una mezcla de ácidos dicarboxílicos seleccionados a partir de ácido itacónico, citracónico o mesacónico. La descarboxilación se lleva a cabo en el rango mayor que 240 y hasta 275°C para proveer una alta selectividad. El producto de ácido metacrílico se puede esterificar para producir un éster. También se describe un método para preparar polímeros o copolímeros de ácido metacrílico o ésteres de ácido metacrílico utilizando el proceso. Opcionalmente, el proceso puede estar precedido por una descarboxilación y, en caso de ser necesario, un paso de deshidratación en una fuente de preácido tal como ácido cítrico o ácido isocítrico.
