Abstract

PURPOSE:To always obtain a satisfactory processed picture and to improve recognizing performance with a visual recognizer, by providing an image pickup means, a threshold value calculation means and an image surface illuminance control means to control the luminance of an image surface so that the optimum binarized threshold value is equal to a prescribed level. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup subject put under illumination of an illuminating device 1 like an LED, an incandescent lamp, etc., is photographed by an image pickup means 2 of a two-dimensional TV camera. Then the multi-level picture information is binarized by a microcomputer 3 containing a threshold value calculating means. The computer 3 supplies a control signal and the diaphragm, etc., of the means 2 is controlled via a lens diaphragm control mechanism 4 so that the illuminance of the photographed surface is controlled. As a result, the optimum threshold value calculated by said calculation means is set at about a center point of a dynamic range of the picture lightness. Thus it is possible to always obtain a satisfactory processed image even though the luminance of the image surface varies in accordance with its environment. At the same time, the optimum threshold value is set at about a center point of the dynamic range of lightness so that the influence of the fluctuation of the disturbance light is extremely reduced. Then the recognizing rate is improved for a visual recognizer.
