Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Cyclopropylmethoxy-2-mercaptobenzmidazole of formula I. USE:Useful as a production intermediate for a benzimidazole derivative which is a novel antiulcer compound. The benzimidazole derivative of formula II can be synthesized by condensing the compound of formula I with a pyridine compound and oxidizing the condensation product. The compound of formula II is an excellent drug having sufficiently high storage stability and exhibiting excellent gastric acid secretion inhibitory action caused by the inhibition of potassium ion-dependent adenosine triphosphatase activity. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reducing cyclopropylmethoxy-1,2-dinitrobenzene of formula III and reacting the resultant cyclopropylmethoxy-o-phenylenediamine with potassium ethylxanthogenate or carbon dioxide.
