この発明は光学的TE−TMモード変換器に関する。
(発明の背景)
電気光学的偏光変換器は応用範囲が広く重要である。例
えば、単一モードのオプティカルファイバシステムにお
いて、典型的な単一モードのファイバ伝送システム、こ
のシステムでは伝播波は普通初期直線偏光を保存しない
ために波動の直線的な偏光状態への周期的な回復が重要
となる、に対する偏光制御装置として働く。

モードを支持するチタニウム拡散チャンネル導波管が形
成されたXカットのリチウムニオベイト(LiNb0a
)基板を用いた、TE−TMモード変換器が示されて
いる。導波管の伝播方向は結晶の2一光軸に沿ったもの
である。電気光学的に生じる偏光の回転は、対角外の電
気光学係数r61によってもたらされる。偏光変換を生
じさせるための電界を印加する電極構造は、導波管に対
して対称位置に配置した3個の独立した電極から構成さ
れ、その中心電極は導波管上に横たわり、一対の外側電
極はそれぞれ中心電極の一方の側に配置されている。外
側電極のうちの1個は接地されており、2個の独立した
電位v1とV2が中心電極と他の一方の外側電極にそれ
ぞれ印加されている。導波管中で電位v1は主に垂直方
向の電界成分に貢献し、v2は主に水平方向の電界成分
に貢献する。vlとv2とを適宜変化させることによっ
て、導波管の一端に入射する単一モード光学波において
そのTEおよびTMモード間の変換が遂行される。

(発明の要約)
我々はY−カットの結晶、例えばY−カットのリチウム
ニオベイト結晶、でより簡単な構造が可能であることを
発見した。このような構造では、結晶の2一光軸に沿っ
て延びる拡散導波管チャンネルに対して対称位置に配置
された一対の電極を含む2個の電極構造によってモード
変換が可能であり、導波管上には電極を配置する必要が
ない。

第1図には、公知の方法でチタンを熱的に拡散すること
によって結晶の2一光軸方向で結晶の長さ方向に沿って
導波管チャンネル12を形成した、Y−カットのLiN

一般に、デポジットされたチタンストリップは厚さが約
480オングストローム、幅が3ミクロンであり、その
拡散は1100°Cの酸素気流中で6時間に渉って行わ

- (1)一表面上でZ−光軸に平行に延び、かつある定ま
つた波長の入射光波におけるTEモードとTMモードの
みを支持する一部分を有した導波管チャンネルと、 前記チャンネルの上記一部分の対向する側に対称に配置
され、該チャンネルを伝播する波を有効にモード変換す

て前記チャンネルはチタンの拡散領域で形成される請求
項1に記載の電気光学装置。 - (4)前記チャンネルはその上に横たわる電極を有しな
いものである、請求項1に記載の電気光学装置。 - (5)対向する側に一対の電極が対称に配置された直線
状の導波管表面チャンネル領域を有するY−カット結晶
と、 前記チャンネル領域の一方の端部に直行モードの直線偏
光成分に変換するためのあるモードの直線偏光成分を含
む入射波を供給する手段と、および上記入射波をあるモ
ードから直交モードに有効にモード変換するために前記
電極に交流電圧を供給する手段、 とを備えたTE−TMモード変換器。 - (6)前記Y−カット結晶はリチウムニオベイトであり
、前記チャンネルは該結晶の上面のチタン拡散領域であ
り、さらに各電極は予め定まつた同じ長さを有する、請
求項5に記載のモード変換器。 - (7)前記電極に供給される電圧は、予め定まつた長さ
以上では入射波をある方向の直線偏光から直交する方向
の直線偏光へ完全に変換するものである、請求項6に記
載のモード変換器。
