Abstract
PURPOSE: The thermal decomposition of a specific phenol derivative is effected in the presence of a catalyst in a hydrogen flow to produce ethylphenol, which is useful in industry, in high selectivity and yield and simultaneously produce vinylphenol in higher yield than in the conventional process.
CONSTITUTION: Thermal decomposition of a phenol derivative of the formula (n is 0W5; X is H, methyl, ethyl, propyl, methoxy, chloromethyl, bromomethyl, Cl, Br, F, hydroxyl, carboxyl, nitro) such as 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane is effected, when needed, using a diluent, in the presence of a catalyst of silica alumina or cerium oxide in a hydrogen flow under normal presure to produce ethylphenol, the major product, as well as vinylphenol. The amount of hydrogen gas used is preferably 0.1W104mol/mol of the starting compound.
EFFECT: Formation of high-boiling condensation products and coking on the catalyst surface are reduced to prolonging the time of continuous use of the catalyst.
