Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a carboxylic ester in high yield and selectivity with a long catalytic life, by reacting an aldehyde with an alcohol in the presence of O2 and a specific catalyst, containing Pd essentially, and supported on a carrier having a specific surface area.
CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde, e.g. an aliphatic saturated aldehyde or aromatic aldehyde, preferably an aliphatic unsaturated aldehyde, is reacted with an alcohol, e.g. an aliphatic saturated alcohol, diol or an aromatic alcohol, in the presence of molecular oxygen and a catalyst of a catalytic metal containing one type of Pd or a compound thereof as an essential component and if necessary one or more types selected from Pb, Hg, Te, Tl and compounds thereof supported on a carrier, e.g. silica, alumina, titania, diatomaceous earth, silicon carbide or silica alumina, having a specific surface area ≤70m2/g, preferably 0.2W50m2/g, at 20W80°C under ordinary pressure to give the aimed carboxylic ester.
