Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting methacrylic or acrylic acid with a lower alcohol in the vapor phase in the presence of molecular oxygen and a compound catalyst having the heteropoly-acid structure con- taining phosphorus and molybdenum at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylcic or acrylic acid is reacted with a lower alcohol, e.g. methanol or ethanol, in the vapor phase in the presence of molecular oxygen and a binary oxide catalyst consisting of phosphorus and molybdenum at 180W 300°C, preferably 200W270°C, to give the aimed substance. The heteropoly-acid structure present in the catalyst to be used is important for the esterification reaction, and the presence of oxygen is necessary. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier, e.g. silica, alumina or titania.
