Abstract

PURPOSE: An aniline and ethylene glycol are brought into contact in gas phase in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst to produce an indole used as a starting material for perfumes and dyes under mild conditions without specified selection and preparation on the aniline as the starting material.
CONSTITUTION: The gas-phase catalytic reaction of an aniline of formula I (R1 is H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, nitro; R2 is H, alkyl) with ethylene glycol is conducted in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst such as Pd-SiO2 or Pt-SiO2 to produce an indole of formula II. In the conventional method, an indole was prepared by intramolecular dehydrogenation of an aniline where the aniline that can be employed is limited to only specific ones and the preparation was also complicated. The reaction temperature is 200W400, preferably 250W350°C, which is lower than in the conventional process. The amount of aniline employed is 1W50, preferably 2W15 moles per mole of ethylene glycol.
