Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction between a phenol and glyoxylic acid in a basic aqueous medium is conducted in the presence of a catalyst selected from the groups consisting of silica-alumina, silica, alumina and alumina hydrate at 10W40°C to produce titled compounds.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst selected from the group consisting of silica-alumina, silica, alumina, and alumina hydrate is used by more than 0.01, preferably more than 0.05g per 1g of the phenol used as the strating material. The reaction of a phenol of formulaI(R is H, lower alkyl), such as 4-methoxyphenol with glyoxylic acid is conducted in an aqueous base medium containing such as sodium hydroxide at 0W 50°C, preferably 10W40°C to yield hydroxymonomandelic acid of formula II[Y is H, either of the two is CH(OH)-COOH]such as 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde in high yield.
