Abstract
PURPOSE: An alcohol is added to a slurry of an alkali metal carbonate in an inert solvent in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, thus preventing the coagulation of the product and producing title compound in high yield in an easy-to handle form, which is used as synthetic intermediates for agricultural chemicals.
CONSTITUTION: An inert solvent is added to a an alkali metal carbonate as light ash to form a slurry of carbonate, to which an alchol is added in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. At this time the alcohol is gradually added to form a carbonate monoester of the formula (R is hydrocarbyl group; M is alkali metal). The amount of the alkali metal carbonate used is 0.5W1.5 times moles of OH group in the alcohol. The inert solvent is preferably compatible to the alcohol and selected depending upon the purpose of the next reactions.
EFFECT: The reaction goes very smoothly and the operation is very simple.
USE: Synthetic intermediates for drugs, dyes, etc.
