Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain manganse dioxide for an alkaline storage battery having high discharge voltage and improved shelf stability, by immersing electrolyzed manganese dioxide in an alkaline solution containing MnO4 2- ion.
CONSTITUTION: An alkaline solution containing MnO4 2- is prepared, for example, by adding potassium permanganate to 10 mol/l aqueous solution of KOH, heating it approximately to its boiling point, converting potassium permanganate into K2MnO4. Electrolyzed manganese dioxide is added to the alkaline solution, which is sealed hermetically, the electrolyzed manganese dioxide is kept in an immersed state at about 60°C for about 10 days, washed with water thoroughly and dried to give manganese dioxide for a battery.
