Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the discharge performance and the preservation performance of a battery, by using a carbon black, which is immersed in an aqueous alkali solution before treated with heat, as a conductive agent for a positive electrode. CONSTITUTION:A carbon black such as acetylene black is immersed in either an aqueous alkali solution containing an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, or an alkaline aqueous solution such as aqueous ammonia, and the mixture is heated before the carbon black is filtered off and dried. The former heat treatment is preferred to be carried out in the former solution maintained at over 60 deg.C. Thus obtained carbon black is used as a conductive agent for a positive electrode 2. When the former mixture subjected to heat treatment is further treated with an acidic aqueous solution, thus obtained carbon black is used as a conductive agent for a neutral electrolyte battery. Since a functional group such as carboxyl group which has high reducing power and exists on the surface of the former carbon black is replaced by a stable salt, any active material such as manganese dioxide or silver oxide is not reduced, and the liquid holding ability of the conductive agent is improved. Consequently, the discharge performance and the preservation performance of a battery can be improved.
