Abstract

Method comprises the electrolytic reduction of nitric oxide in acid medium at a porous solid electrode formed of materials with a high hydrogen overpotential, such as graphite, or cadmium. The process is pref. carried out at 15-40 degrees C in a solution of strong acid (pH pref. about 1) as catholyte. The cathode is pref. formed either as a powder compact or as a rolled foil giving a large meniscus area within which the reduction takes place.
