Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance the stability of silver peroxide contained in a positive electrode, by adding cadmium to the positive electrode, and adding tellurium to an alkaline electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode for a silver peroxide battery is made of silver peroxide and contains over 0.03wt% of cadmium which is used as a metal and is contained in a cadmium compound. An alkaline electrolyte for the battery contains tellurium contained in a tellurium compound. The former cadmium compound may be, for example, cadmium oxide, cadmium hydroxide, a tellurium compound, a selenium compound, a sulfide, a nitrate or a stearate. It is especially preferable that the content of cadmium is over 0.05wt% of the positive electrode. The former tellurium compound may be tellurium dioxide, telluric acid, metal tellurium powder, sodium tellurite or the like which is soluble in the former alkaline electrolyte. The content of tellurium is preferred to be 0.01g/l-1.0g/l, especially 0.04g/l, of the electrolyte. The cadmium compound may be dissolved in the alkaline electrolyte instead of being dissolved in the positive electrode, although the solubility of the cadmium compound is small in the alkaline electrolyte. As a result, the stability of silver oxide contained in the positive electrode is enhanced. In addition, the above constitution can be effectively applied especially to potassium hydroxide electrolyte.
