Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively convert the manganese ion in sea water into manganese dioxide, by adding aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite produced by the nonmembrane electrolysis of the sea water, to the sea water before electrolysis and specifying the addition amount and reaction time.
CONSTITUTION: Deposition of manganese ion in sea water as manganese dioxide and sticking on the surface of anode which is covered by the coat containing platinum group metal oxide, are prevented. That is, sodium hypochlorite produced by the electrolysis of the sea water, is added to the sea water before electrolysis at 300W7,000 times, preferably 500W2,000 times, stoichiometric amount of oxidizing manganese ion in the sea water to manganese dioxide. Further, stoichiometric ratio [NaClO]/[Mn2+] is 1.35. Reaction time is ≥10 seconds, preferably 30secW3min. Fine particle manganese dioxide produced here, is in suspended state in the sea water and is discharged out of vessel and then, electrode face is not covered by said manganese dioxide.
