Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of dyes, pigments, pesticides and pharmaceuticals, in high yield, by reacting a nitrotoluene derivative sulfo-substituted at the nucleus with a hypochlorous acid salt in the presence of an alkali hydroxide using a heavy metal peroxide as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective nitrobenzoic acid sulfo-substituted at the nucleus is obtained by reacting the nitrotoluene derivative sulfo-substituted at the nucleus (e.g. 2-nitrotoluene-4-sulfonic acid) with a hypochlorous acid salt in the presence of an alkali hydroxide such as NaOH at room temperature W100°C, especially preferably 60W85°C, using a heavy metal peroxide (e.g. nickel peroxide, cobalt peroxide, etc.) as a catalyst.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be prepared easily, in high quality, under mild conditions, using a low-cost oxidizing agent. The heavy metal peroxide used as the catalyst is essentially insoluble in water and organic solvents, and can be easily filtered, recovered and reused.
