Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, pesticides and dyes, in high selectivity and yield, by reacting a 2,6-diformylphenol derivative with an N-containing compound and oxygen, in a basic aqueous solution, in the presence of a metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula II (X is H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen), e.g. 2,6-dicyanophenol, is prepared by reacting a 2,6-diformylphenol derivative of formula I, e.g. 2,6-diformylphenol, with an N-containing compound selected from ammonia, urea and an inorganic ammonium salt, and oxygen, in the presence of a metal catalyst (e.g. CuO, etc.), in a basic aqueous medium (e.g. NaOH).
EFFECT: Simple process one stage reaction, and short reaction time.
