Abstract

PURPOSE:To promote a degassing effect and to prevent the generation of welding defects in the stage of electron beam welding of extra thick materials by changing the energy to be applied upon molten metal regularly thereby making the motion of the molten metal forcibly steady. CONSTITUTION:In the stage of welding steel materials of >=50mm. thickness by electron beam welding, the quantity of heat input is changed regularly to give forcible motion to the molten metal in the weld zone and to make its movement steady, thereby accelerating the regular solidification of the molten metal and preventing the generation of cavities and defects such as solidification cracking. To this end, the quantity of heat input is changed by changing electric current, and the current value is increased or decreased within a + or -0.5-50% range on the basis of the optimum value of a constant current. The periods thereof are changed at relatively low frequencies of 0.5-100Hz and the patterns of the current changes are formed into a sinusoidal or square wave form.
