Abstract
PURPOSE: To lower preheating temp. and obtain a weld zone which is less brittle during use by welding the narrow-spaced, long leg part of a groove of a U shape or the like by an electron beam, then arc welding the same in butt welding of thick steel plates.
CONSTITUTION: The end edges of thick steel plates 1, 1 of about ≥100W150mm thicknesses are worked to a U-(Y- or J is equally well) shaped groove of a long leg part 3 of approximately 0mm in root gap. The length of the leg part 3 is kept within the distance at which it can be penetrated by EB welding, and the rate thereof to the depth of a groove part 2 is selected depending upon said purpose, the kind of the welding machine used, welding conditions, etc. A weld zone 4 is obtained by EB welding of the leg part 3, after which mutilayer welding is carried out by arc welding, whereby a weld zone 5 is obtained.
