Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a novel polyether having a specific repeating unit, by reacting a specific compound containing both a phenolic hydroxyl group and a halogenomethyl group with an aqueous solution of caustic soda, etc. in the presence of a catalyst transferring between phases.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound[e.g., 4-chloromethylphenol, etc.) shown by the formulaI(Y is Cl, Br; Ar is bifunctional aromatic group; R is bifunctional alkylene group) containing both a phenolic hydroxyl group and a hologenomethyl group]is reacted with (B) an aqueous solution of caustic soda or caustic potash in the presence of (C) a catalyst transferring between phases (e.g., tetrabutylammonium bromide, etc.) usually at 50W100°C for 2W10hr to give a polyether having a repeating unit shown by the formula II. The molar amount of the component B is preferably an excess amount of 1.1W about 10 times of that of the component A. The component A is preferably used as a solution of an organic solvent.
